Treasure should have been a beautiful chocolate & tan, 5-year-old cocker spaniel. In our eyes, he is. But life has not been kind for our poor Treasure. Instead of knowing a loving home, Treasure has known neglect and abuse from people who should have been protecting and loving him. I was contacted by a local shelter when Treasure was brought in. He was matted to the skin and very, very frightened. He would shake uncontrollably at the shelter, but began to cautiously approach me when I visited him. I visited him regularly, promising him that I’d return and would take him away to find a new home. I called the shelter every other day begging them to let me take him, at least to the vet, where he could be sedated and freed from the mats. Unfortunately, the shelter called me to say that they were going to euthanize him, he was lethargic, paralyzed and dying. Fearing a stroke, a fellow rescuer and I rushed to the shelter. At the very least, he would know he was loved and have friendly faces with him in his final moments. When we arrived at the shelter, Treasure raised his head, tried to get up and wagged his tail at us. He was not lethargic or paralyzed, but clearly in a great deal of pain. We couldn’t leave him there. So we took him to one of our vets. The significant matting prevented good x-rays, but the x-rays did reveal that a fishhook was trapped in his coat. The bloodwork and testing showed a severe systemic infection, but did not show signs of a stroke or a medical cause for his sudden inability to use his legs. Further examination after the vet shaved the mats from his poor little body has led the vet to believe that Treasure has suffered a recent, traumatic injury to his spine, such as being dropped or severely kicked. Although antibiotics will take care of his infection, further testing is required to determine the precise nature of the spinal injury and what, if anything, can be done to help Treasure. There are people who will tell us that we should “put him out of his misery”. But we are not willing to give up on such a sweet little man who greets us with a wagging tail and kisses. Treasure is willing to fight for his life. We are going to fight for Treasure. But we cannot do it alone. We need your help. As of November 28, Treasure’s medical expenses have already surpassed $600 and are climbing. Further testing and treatment with a veterinary orthopedist are still necessary and will be expensive. We are a small cocker spaniel rescue that relies on adoption fees and donations to save these precious creatures. We are willing to go deeper into debt to help Treasure. We are in desperate need of donations to help us continue the FIGHT FOR TREASURE’S LIFE. Fight For Treasure, Abandoned Angels Inc. P.O. Box 545426 Flushing, NY 11354 |
