Shelby is a beautiful petite black and white female Cocker Spaniel. This sweet, gentle Angel is about 4 to 5 years old and weighed only 12 pounds when first rescued. Shelby was brought in as a stray to a local shelter infested with thousands of fleas. The shelter administered frontline but apparently that wasn't enough to kill the infestation. So as Shelby remained in the shelter, the fleas were causing her to become ill slowly. Who knows how long Shelby was on the street in this horrific condition. The shelter spayed Shelby anyway, not realizing how sick she really was. Well when we got her, we brought Shelby to our Vet. The fleas were still alive on her just sucking the life out of her. Regardless that she was just spayed, the Vet requested she be given a bath immediately to rid her of the fleas. The water turned pure red. Well the fleas are now gone but the result of being infested with fleas has begun to surface. Shelby has a weakened immune system, she has lost half of her blood volume, she has anemia, pneumonia, and possibly other ailments. Sweet Shelby in now on IV antibiotics, vitamin infusion, iron injections and more. Shelby has had x-rays, echo cardiograms and several blood tests thus far. The good news is that she is Heart worm negative and thank God there are no other type of parasites in her bloodstream. Shelby is extremely weak and frail, but she is alert and responsive. Sweet Shelby gets so excited when anyone goes to pet her that she will start coughing and wheezing uncontrolably, so the Vet wants her to stay quiet and get plenty of rest. We are doing everything possible to keep Shelby well. It is so sad, when I visit Shelby and she stares at me with her innocent eyes, I can only see hope. Hope that she will see a brighter tomorrow. Hope that she will make a complete recovery. Hope that one day she will have a loving, forever home and be able to put this all behind her. We do not know why God puts these special Angels in our lives but he does. There must be a reason for Shelby to be here and we will do everything possible to make Shelby better. Once Shelby is released from the hospital she will be going to a foster home to recuperate. Although we do need donations to help us afford her medical care, we are asking for something much greater, Your Prayers for Shelby. Please keep Shelby in your thoughts and prayers while she is ill and recovering. God bless! UPDATE: 8/21/05 Thank you for your prayers and donations for Shelby.
