BIO: Several months ago, we looked into the eyes of an Angel that was abandoned on the streets of Staten Island in horrific condition and told him that everything would be alright. Henry was a stray between 8 and 10 years old who was brought to a local shelter a total bloody mess. His body was covered in hot sports (sores), the result of chronic scratching. Poor Henry cried in pain. The shelter said they had never seen a dog in such terrible condition and administered several types of topical solutions to make Henry comfortable, even putting socks on him. Henry was such a good boy throughout the ordeal of his treatment, the shelter felt he should not be euthanized and sent a plea out to Rescue. We looked at his pathetic picture and could not turn our backs on him. We immediately had him transported to our Vet's office and ordered extensive blood work, skin scrapings, and skin cultures on Henry, all of which came back negative for the usual suspects (mange, ringworm, etc). Although Henry does have a heart murmur and some visual deficit, his bloodwork actually looks excellent. Our vet subsequently ran a battery of allergy tests, which revealed a number of environmental allergies. We have been administering custom mixed allergy shots on Henry for several months now, as well as a lengthy course of antibiotics, and Henry has slowly begun to improve. Despite his allergies, Henry need never have been reduced to the condition in which he was found … the true culprit is a lifetime of NEGLECT by owners who did not provide Henry with the love and care he so deserved. One would never know from Henry's demeanor what an unfortunate boy he was before coming into Rescue. He loves life, going for walks, being petted, and simply being near those who care for him. He showers us with endless kisses and gets along well with other dogs, even with cats. He is a gentle boy who could even be trusted with the smallest of children. Henry is a Cocker with an enormous loving heart and a soul to match. If your heart and soul are equally large, perhaps Henry is the dog for you. You will never come across a pet more grateful or deserving than our Henry. |
