BIG NEWS: Bittersweet Chocolate has left the vet after 7 weeks of care and has now joined the rest of our gang living at the wonderful Bark and Play cageless boarding facility (www.barkandplayny.com). Bittersweet seems to have overcome most of his fear of people and is doing well with all the playmates he is meeting in this doggie version of "summer camp." Bittersweet Chocolate has been re-named "Milagro" (the Spanish for "Miracle") by the staff, because it is a miracle not only that he survived his ordeal, but that he has risen to the challenge of giving human beings another chance. We are looking for a very special home for Milagro, who is ready for adoption now. We will be posting some updated photos during the weekend of August 4-5. UPDATE: These photos of Bittersweet Chocolate were taken after he had gained 8 pounds and received one month of veterinary care (he remains in the hospital). As one can see, he is still very skinny, therefore you can well imagine his condition when he came into rescue. Bittersweet Chocolate is being fed 3 times a day and, while still cautious around people, no longer screams with terror when his cage is approached. He is playful and loving with the hospital staff and expected to recover fully from his physical traumas. His emotional scars may take more time to heal, but from our experience with many abused and neglected Cockers, we know that emotional recovery is possible (amazingly, he is not at all food aggressive). We anticipate that Bittersweet Chocolate will be available for adoption at the beginning of August. He will be neutered, microchipped, up-to-date with all shots, and professionally groomed prior to adoption. BIO: Bittersweet Chocolate is the latest member of our Emergency Case Club ... an exclusive group that no animal should ever have to join. This sad little purebred Cocker Spaniel came into the Brooklyn Shelter as a severely emaciated stray covered in ringworm. He is all of 12 pounds, which would be minute for even a female Cocker. We believe that he was INTENTIONALLY STARVED, as there is simply no other way to account for the severity of his physical condition. Bittersweet Chocolate was so weak and dehydrated when he arrived at the shelter that he could barely stand. Given how matted he was, the medical staff found him difficult to examine, so they shaved him down. Underneath it all, they discovered a skeletal frame as well as a deep gash on this poor baby's chest. What misfortunes befell this angelic little soul on the streets of New York City we will never know. Bittersweet Chocolate is currently receiving IV fluids and other emergency medical care at our vet's office.
