Sir Max

Sir Max is a 9 year old purebred English Cocker Spaniel who was surrendered a local shelter by his owner due to her own terminal illness. She was weeping hysterically at the time of his surrender. From the expression on Max's face, it is clear that he continues to grieve for her. Sir Max came to us with a severe infection in one ear, which we initially thought might require surgery. Fortunately, we have been successful in saving the ear. Sir Max is now a very healthy boy, although as an older dog he does have some stiffness in his joints, for which he is taking Cosequin. Sir Max would do best in an adult only home, perhaps with a single woman, as he is accustomed to being the center of his former mom's world. Sir Max has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like to offer Sir Max a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call his own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Sir Max will be checking his email inbox daily.

Babyface

Babyface says: "I've got the cutest little Babyface!" And who could disagree? Of course, we've included a "before" photo just to give you an idea of Baby's prior neglected condition. Beneath those sad eyes and underneath all those filthy mats, it was indeed difficult to recognize this most adorable of Babyfaces ... unless one was actually looking to find it, which of course we were!

Baby is an 8 year old buff and white male Cocker Spaniel who came into the Manhattan Shelter as a stray. As he is almost completely blind, no one would step up for him, even with that cutest of little Babyfaces gazing out hopefully towards the world from inside his cage. At Abandoned Angels we happen to have a special love for blind dogs (and for lost souls generally). We find their courage contagious. No matter how bad things get, they keep moving forward - till the bitter end, they hope for good things to come their way. And sometimes there is indeed a little miracle for dogs like Baby (we only wish a miracle would come along for every dog in need).

If you would like to be a part of Baby's miracle, by either offering him an adoptive home or a foster home while he is waiting for permanent placement, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Other than his blindness and dry eye (for which he receives daily drops), Baby is in very good health. Despite all he has been through, he has a wonderful disposition and will make an excellent family pet. Baby has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. He has just been professionally groomed, will go home with a new leash and collar, and of course his adorable Babyface.

Jagger

Jagger is a very handsome 1 year old parti-colored Cocker Spaniel with striking black and white markings. Jagger is being surrendered to rescue by his family as they have insufficient time to devote to his training. He is spending too much time crated and has come to hate his crate. At most, Jagger should be gated in a kitchen area going forward. Jagger would do best with an experienced cocker spaniel owner who works from home or otherwise has a lot of time to devote to him. He can be a little stubborn, so needs an alpha-type owner to provide gentle discipline and lots of structure. We are inclined to think that Jagger would do best in an adult only household where someone can really focus on helping him reach his full potential. He is a beautiful dog with a wonderful spirit whose energy simply needs to be chanelled in a positive way. Jagger has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Jagger, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Jagger is ready to rock 'n roll with you!

Valentine ~ PENDING

Valentine says "Peek-a-Boo ... I'm your secret admirer!" This adorable 3 month old female Jack Russell cross is a tiny heartbreaker. What she is mixed with we cannot say, but it is definitely another small breed ... this baby girl is sure to remain petite. Valentine came into the Manhattan Shelter at the tail end of January as a stray. She may have lost her way, but one thing's certain ... as soon as you meet her, you are sure to lose your heart! Valentine has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you are ready to find your one true love in time for Valentine's Day, then look no further ... to ask Valentine to "Be Mine", please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Cupid has promised Valentine that he has something special in the works ... she can't wait to discover what he has in store!

Mandy

Mandy is a very delicate and pretty 6 year old Jack Russell Terrier who was found as a stray and brought to Animal Control. She was wearing a name tag but had no other identification. When no one came looking for her and her stray time was up, Mandy was released to rescue. Mandy looks to have had a tough life, with an old scar from an embedded collar evident on her neck. That wound has long since healed, but we wonder what other hurts this poor sweet girl has endured in her short life. Whatever they may be, Mandy holds no grudges. She is a true lap dog weighing just 10 pounds who enjoys being held and cuddled and giving gentle kisses. Mandy has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She has just been professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. Like the Barry Manilow song, Mandy will come and give without taking, kiss you and stop you from shaking. If you can provide Mandy with the same creature comforts, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Mandy says, "I need you!"

Truffles ~ PENDING

Truffles, Truffles and more Truffles just in time for Valentine's Day! Truffles is our beautiful chocolate and tan Valentine girl. This 7 year old female Cocker Spaniel was surrendered by her family to the Staten Island pound. No reasons were given, but we cannot imagine that Truffles was to blame. She is sugar sweet and an absolute love bug. Truffles could easily be placed in a home with kids and, as she gets along well with both dogs and cats, would fit right into a multiple pet household. Truffles is currently being treated for kennel cough (she has the "snuffles"), but will be spayed and treated to a dental as soon as she recovers. She is current on all shots, microchipped, and has tested negative for heartworm. Truffles has just been professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Truffles (or to offer her a foster home while she awaits her forever family) please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Truffles is ready to become your One True Love.

George Now and Then

UPDATE: A BIG THANK YOU TO MIRNA OF MANHATTAN FOR OFFERING GEORGE A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!

Rod Stewart's famous lyrics may sum it up best: "Some guys have all the luck, some guys have all the pain." Meet George who, sadly, falls into the "pain" category. We first met George three years ago when he was brought into a local grooming shop by his owner at just one year old. He was so emaciated that he could hardly stand (photo 3 is of George when he first came to us ... his coloring looks different because of the lighting in the respective shots). George weighed a mere ten pounds, less than half his healthy body weight. We initially named this little guy Miracle, as it was truly an act of God that he had survived. Apparently he was left tied out on a rope for most of his life and no one thought much about the fact that he actually needed to eat. He had also obviously been beaten, as whenever anyone went to pet him, he cowered on the floor, crawled on his belly and closed his eyes. Then he would roll onto his back in fear. We nursed Miracle back to health through emergency IV fluids and then a regimen of small meals. Initially he protected both his food and his water (understandably) but in time became more trusting. Once he had recovered both physically and emotionally, Miracle was adopted out to a young couple who named him George. Over the next few years we heard from the adoptive family from time to time and were told that all was well ... until, of course, they decided to have a baby. We then received a call saying that George had to go. Apparently some of his food guarding issues had returned once he went home, which the family never bothered to address or disclose to us. Had they ever mentioned the problem, we would certainly have intervened and sent a trainer out to work with George. We cannot believe that, after all he has been through, someone would again view George as "disposable." But then again, "some guys have all the pain." While he is a Rod Stewart fan, George no longer wants this theme song as his own. He feels that he deserves some luck as well and is now looking for another miracle. George's foster mom has been working with him on his food guarding issues, which are steadily improving. He is a loving dog who will do fine in an adult only environment. Can you offer him a forever home? George has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He has just been professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you can help turn George into one of the guys who "have all the luck" (or at least their fair share of it), please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. George is waiting for his lucky day.

Tulah ~ PENDING

Tulah is a very sweet 6 year old buff and white female Cocker Spaniel who came into the Brooklyn Shelter as a stray. She is in good shape except for a slight cataract in one eye (the other is fine) and an ear infection, which is currently being addressed with medication. Tulah has a wonderful temperament, so could easily be placed in a home with children. She is great with other dogs and should be fine with cats. Tulah has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She has just been professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you are looking for your One True Love, then you need look no further than Tulah. Tulah would love to be home in time for Valentine's Day (and sends you a kiss in the meantime!)

Kylie

Kylie is a very petite sable female Cocker Spaniel just 3 years old. She's rather upset right now, having been bounced between a few homes before someone did the sensible thing and surrendered her to rescue. Kylie was a pet store purchase by someone who intended to breed her but (thankfully) never got around to it. Kylie has not had a great deal of stability in her life thus far, so would do best in a quiet environment where she can be given the opportunity to bond and feel secure. She definitely needs adult only placement in a low-key household and would likely do best as an only pet. Kylie has now been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Kylie, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Kylie is ready to take some baby steps towards reaching her full potential.

Wishbone ~ MISSING

PLEASE HELP US ... OUR DEAR LITTLE WISHBONE ESCAPED FROM HIS FOSTER HOME ON 1/17/10 WHEN THE MAILMAN LEFT THE GATE TO THE FRONT YARD OPEN. HIS BIO COULD NOT BE MORE TRUE: WISHBONE IS OFF LOOKING FOR HIS NEXT GREAT ADVENTURE. WISHBONE HAS BEEN SPOTTED AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS IN COLLEGE POINT, NY, BUT NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO APPREHEND HIM. SHOULD YOU SEE WISHBONE (WHO ANSWERS TO "JACK"), PLEASE DO NOT CHASE! HE WILL SIMPLY RUN. PLEASE IMMEDIATELY CALL ABANDONED ANGELS AT 917-257-0911 AND LET US KNOW HIS LOCATION. PLEASE KEEP WISHBONE (AKA "JACK") IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. WE DESPERATELY WANT HIM BACK! WE ARE WISHING ON A STAR AND HOPING FOR A MIRACLE. PLEASE PRAY THAT OUR WISHBONE WILL FIND HIS WAY HOME TO US.

Wishbone is a 7 year old Jack Russell Terrier named for the famous Wishbone dog (pictured here in a Robin Hood outfit) who had his own children's television show back in the 1990s. Like his namesake, our Wishbone has a BIG imagination and is always on the look-out for a new adventure. Unfortunately, his past life is all about misadventure and misunderstanding. His story with us began when he was surrendered by his family to the Brooklyn pound with no explanation; we imagine they simply wanted this little sitcom of a dog off the air due to loss of viewer interest. Not to worry, though ... our Wishbone has now found a whole new audience and is sure to once again become a superstar. Wishbone has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, has tested negative for heartworm, and been treated to a dental. He will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. In fact, if we can find a Robin Hood costume for him, he'll go home with that too. If you would like to adopt Wishbone, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Wishbone is wishing on a star ... and wondering where you are.

Gianni Versace ~ PENDING

NO MORE APPLICATIONS FOR VERSACE, PLEASE!! WE HAVE BEEN INUNDATED WITH EXPRESSIONS OF SUPPORT FOR THIS LITTLE GUY. THANK YOU, EVERYONE, FOR YOUR KINDNESS TOWARDS HIM. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS HIS MEDICAL CARE, PLEASE SEND TO THE FOLLOWING PAYPAL ADDRESS: DONATION@NYABANDONEDANGELS.COM (PLEASE SPECIFY "FOR GIANNI" IN THE PAYPAL MESSAGE BOX). WITH HEARTFELT THANKS FROM ALL OF US.

BIO:

Gianni Versace is an 8 month old Jack Russell/Italian Greyhound mixed breed puppy who came to us from the Brooklyn Shelter. We intended to take in his sister Donatella as well, but upon arriving at the shelter this morning (1/7/10), we were informed that she had died just an hour beforehand. These poor dogs were brought to ACC by a monstrous couple who claimed that they could not afford to feed them - from their emaciated condition, that could not be more clear. Before surrendering them, however, they obviously waited until they were on the brink of death. Animal cruelty charges are now being pursued and rightfully so. Even if they were catwalk models, Vogue magazine would surely have labeled these poor pups far too thin for a fashion shoot. The survivor, Gianni, is now on emergency IV fluids at our vet's office. Once he is strong enough, he will need to be fed three times per day. We pray that he has not sustained organ damage as a result of starvation and that he will recover. It will be at least a month before he is strong enough to begin a bittersweet new life without his sister, Donatella, with whom he was deeply bonded. Our heart just breaks for him, as well as for poor Donatella, who came so close to being saved. Despite his neglectful beginning, Gianni is a very loving, playful puppy who is trusting of people and friendly towards other dogs. Gianni will be neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and tested for heartworm before adoption. He will also be professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you agree that a dog should look like more than a clothes-hanger and would like to provide Gianni with a loving home in which to continue his recovery, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Gianni believes that full-figured fashion is the order of the day - and would like another cookie to prove it.

Lord Byron ~ PENDING

Byron is a handsome black and tan Cocker Spaniel just 2 years old who recently came to us from the Brooklyn Shelter. Byron has so much grace and elegance, he is like poetry in motion ... so of course he is named for a famous poet. Byron is a very sweet and loving dog who would do best in a low-key household. He is fearful of children, as we understand that he was mistreated by a child in a prior home. He may get over this with time, but for the time being we are recommending that he be placed in an adult only home or in a home with kids who are over 12 and dog savvy. Byron has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He has been professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to read sonnets with Byron, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Byron is waiting to hear from you!

Boris

A BIG THANK YOU TO JENNIE OF LEONIA, NJ, FOR OFFERING BORIS A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME, WHICH BORIS IS SHARING WITH JENNIE'S TWO RESCUED COCKERS. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, JENNIE!!

Meet our little Wimbledon champ ... an adorable 7 year old Cocker Spaniel named Boris (after Boris Becker, of course). Like the famous pro, our Boris will turn a somersault in pursuit of a tennis ball, but has such grace and talent that he can win without a racket. He's the most playful guy around and the quintessential sportsman. Boris was turned into the Brooklyn Shelter as a stray who went unclaimed. Despite the kennel cough he contracted, we immediately recognized Boris as a champ. Boris is now hitting the court with the rest of the gang in Rescue, where there are plenty of tennis balls to go around. Boris has now recovered from kennel cough, has been neutered, microchipped, treated to a dental, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to perfect your swing with Boris by your side, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Boris is waiting to put some "love" back in your game.

Beautiful Blue

Beautiful Blue is a handsome 5 year old merle Cocker Spaniel named for his one blue eye. Blue is now back in rescue after 3 years in a wonderful adoptive home, which he shared with an older gentleman who had recently been widowed. It was just the two guys together in their cozy Connecticut cottage. They spent their days enjoying dad's comfy retirement;, watching TV, going to the local dog run, and gardening. Sadly, Blue's dad is no longer well enough to care for him, therefore Blue has now made his way back to rescue. Given his recent placement, Blue would make an excellent companion for a single person who has a low key lifestyle. He is a very healthy boy who has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and tested negative for heartworm. He has just been professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to give Beautiful Blue a beautiful new beginning, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Blue is waiting for You!

Blues Clues

Meet Blues Clues ... a little confused about how he got here, but hardly Clueless. Blues Clues is a 10 year old buff and white Cocker Spaniel with a heart of gold who was found as a stray on Staten Island. Sadly, no one came looking for this refined older gent during his stint at Animal Care and Control, whereupon he was released to rescue. Blues Clues is a very gentle boy who gets along well with people and other pets. He enjoys the usual suspects: going for walks, tasty treats, and of course belly rubs. Blues Clues has been neutered, microchipped, is current on all shots, and been treated to a dental. He will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to show our Blues Clues the way home to your heart, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. This 10 year old sweetheart would love to begin 2010 on the right foot, safe in the care of the forever family he has spent the last decade trying to find. Of course our Blues Clues knows that "you can't hurry love" but is tired of that old adage "you just have to wait" ... please let this sweet older boy know that his time has come at last!

Fiesta ~ PENDING

Fiesta is a handsome 7-8 year old male Cocker Spaniel who was surrendered to the Manhattan Shelter by his family for reasons unknown to us. Fiesta is a very sweet and healthy boy with a winning temperament, so surely he is not to blame. He loves people and gets along well with other animals, so could easily join a multiple pet household. Fiesta has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He has just been treated to a dental as well as a professional grooming, so is all ready to go. If you would like to invite Fiesta to your forever house party, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Fiesta is waiting to hear from you!

Christmas Carol

Christmas Carol is a Cocker/Retriever cross who was recently found wandering alone in a rural upstate area. The good samaritan who found her believes Christmas Carol to have been dumped along the rural stretch of roadside where she picked her up. Nevertheless, she contacted the local pound and posted signs, with no result, following which she contacted rescue. Christmas Carol is believed to be about 5 years old. She is a very calm and sweet-natured girl who loves the company of people and gets along well with other dogs. Christmas Carol has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, has tested negative for heartworm, and even been treated to a dental. If you would like to adopt Christmas Carol, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. She is sure to bring joy and cheer to your holiday season and all seasons to come.

Elmer

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE CHAN FAMILY OF EDISON, NJ, FOR OFFERING ELMER A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME. ELMER IS OFTEN ON THE ROAD WITH HIS FOSTER DAD AS HE TRAVELS IN BETWEEN SYRACUSE AND EDISON ... ELMER IS A GREAT TRAVEL BUDDY AND LOVES THE CAR! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, TO THE CHAN FAMILY!

Elmer is a handsome buff and white Cocker Spaniel just 2 years old. Elmer has been in and out of the NYC shelter system a couple of times through no fault of his own - he's quite a sweet dog, one who has just had bad luck!! Now that he is safe in rescue, we will work on finding Elmer the RIGHT place to go. Elmer is a happy-to-lucky type who gets along with people and other dogs. He has not had much consistency or training in his young life, so could use an experienced owner to show him the way to reaching his full potential. Elmer is very healthy, has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He has just enjoyed a professional grooming and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Elmer, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Once he has the opportunity to bond and feel secure, Elmer is sure to stick to you like Glue.

Jonas

Jonas is a tall, regal looking poodle, who possibly has some wheaton terrier in him (in any event, he's as hypoallergenic as they come). Jonas is a loving dog with his own family, but can be somewhat fearful with strangers. Jonas needs someone who will be committed to him through bumps and setbacks. Sadly, too many people have simply given up on him. Jonas needs a very low key home, preferably in a rural or suburban setting, perhaps with a single person or a couple who lead a quiet life (no kids). Experience with troubled animals is essential. Jonas has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date with all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like to adopt Jonas, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Jonas will be checking his inbox daily.

Spirit aka Canoli

UPDATE:A BIG THANK YOU TO EVA OF DOVER, NJ FOR OFFERING CANNOLI AKA SPIRIT A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME.

Canolli is a handsome senior Cocker Spaniel believed to be about 10 years old. Canolli came to us from a shelter in New Jersey. While we generally rescue a bit closer to our own doorstep, Canolli was such a severe neglect case that we could not refuse him. For many years, he was an outdoor dog, kept in conditions so decrepit that he eventually contracted maggots. As they usually infest only dead aimals, this should provide a vivid impression of what this poor dog's condition was. The shelter intended to put him down, but sent out a last minute plea to rescue. Upon first meeting him, our volunteer found him to be quite spiritless. However, she happened to have some pastry in her car and offered him a lick of cannolli filling ... whereupon he sprang to life. He trotted back into the shelter with a new name ("Cannolli") and a bit of a spring in his step. The paperwork was filled out and Cannolli was sprung. Cannolli no longer has any creepy crawlies on his person and is gradually learning what it means to be loved. He has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. Cannolli has been professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Cannolli, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. You will find this dog to be as sweet as he sounds.

Sparky

Sparky has been an Abandoned Angel for a couple of years now. He came to us from the Brooklyn Shelter at age 7 and eventually made his way to New England, where he went to foster on a farm. Sadly, his foster mom became unable to care for him due to illness and family problems. At the age of 9, Sparky is therefore once again in the market for a safe and loving home. Although an older dog, he has many things going for him, including a GREAT TEMPERAMENT. He will do fine with slightly older kids as well as with other pets. Sparky has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. Sparky does have a mild thyroid condition, for which he receives a daily pill (the cost is literally pennies and he will go home with a big supply). Sparky will be professionally groomed before leaving rescue and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to offer Sparky a foster home or, better still, a forever home to call his own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. When you meet him, sparks are sure to fly!

Lady Love

HOLIDAY UPDATE: A BIG THANK YOU TO MINDY AND FAMILY OF SAUGERTIES, NY, FOR OFFERING LADY LOVE A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME, JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS. MINDY HAS BEEN FOSTER MOM EXTRAORDINAIRE (AND ALSO ADOPTER EXTRAORDINAIRE) TO MULTIPLE ABANDONED ANGELS DOGS. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, MINDY FOR PROVIDING THIS SPECIAL GIRL WITH SUCH A SPECIAL PLACEMENT AND ENSURING THAT HER CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR IS BRIGHT!

SAD UPDATE: LADY HAS RECENTLY BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH A VERY RARE GENETIC CONDITION KNOWN AS EHLERS-DANLOSS SYNDROME, WHEREIN THE BODY PRODUCES TOO MUCH COLLAGEN. THE RESULT IS EXCESS SKIN PRODUCTION (SHE HAS LOTS OF FOLDS, A BIT LIKE A SHARPEI, AND BRUISES EASILY). WHILE THERE IS NO CURE OR TREATMENT - AND NO WAY TO TELL AT THIS POINT WHETHER HER CONDITION WILL DETERIORATE - LADY IS A HAPPY DOG WHO CAN LEAD A HAPPY LIFE. ALTHOUGH SHE LOVES OTHER DOGS, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT SHE BE AN ONLY PET TO PREVENT INJURY THROUGH ANY ROUGH-HOUSING. REALISTICALLY, LADY IS NOT AN ADOPTIVE CANDIDATE, BUT WILL MAKE A GREAT FOSTER DOG FOR SOMEONE WHO WISHES TO OPEN THEIR HEART AND HOME TO A SPECIAL NEEDS ANIMAL. IF THAT PERSON MIGHT BE YOU, PLEASE EMAIL RESCUE@NYABANDONEDANGELS.COM AND REQUEST AN APPLICATION.

Lady Love (a great fan of the late jazz singer Lou Rawls) is a very pretty buff and white Cocker Spaniel just 6 years old. She is quite a petite little Cocker, weighing only 20 pounds. Lady was surrendered to the Brooklyn Shelter when her owner became overwhelmed by personal problems. After surrendering Lady, her owner called us in a frantic state and asked us to help, whereupon we took Lady in. Lady is a very sweet and gentle girl who gets along well with everyone and will make an excellent family pet. Lady has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She has been professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Lady, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Lady Love is waiting for Lady Luck to show her the way home.

Maestro aka Mikey

Maestro (fondly known to us as "Mikey") is a handsome 3 year old buff and white Cocker Spaniel crossed with Great Pyrenees. He is a truly majestic looking dog with the playfulness of a Cocker and the gentle, kindly nature of a Pyrenees. Mikey came to us from the Brooklyn Shelter, where he had been turned in as a stray. He was initially rather fearful in new situations and with new people, but has come around nicely and adjusted well to his life in rescue. He is becoming much more confident and is at last a happy dog. Mikey has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. Time and time again, we have seen dogs with a history of neglect and abuse rise to the occasion when given half a chance to be loved. If you would like to offer Mikey that opportunity, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Mikey does not need an entire orchestra to make his life complete. Like all great Maestros, he knows that most symphonies are written by sole composers. Perhaps you are the one destined to help him hear music again.

Pythagoras

Pythagoras (fondly known to us as "Peeky") is a handsome 7-8 year old reddish buff Cocker Spaniel who recently came to us from Brooklyn ACC. He has stood out among the crowd as such a brilliant dog that we have named him after an ancient Greek philosopher, mathematician and astronomer. We speculate that our Pythagoras was studying the moon and the stars when he lost his way one recent fall evening ... he would not be the first absent-minded professor to become so engrossed in the cerebral that he forgot the practical (like where he lived). While at Animal Control, Pythagoras sat around working on algorithms just to pass the time. He had halfway concluded that rescue for a somewhat older dog was pi in the sky when we came up with a formula for springing him. Pythagoras has now been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. The only thing now missing from the equation of his life is a place called home. If you would like to offer Pythagoras a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call his own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Pythagoras will make the perfect companion with whom to go star-gazing (and is brainy enough to help you balance your checkbook).

Mystique ~ PENDING

Mystique is a very pretty 3 year old chocolate brown Cocker Spaniel with a winning way about her. She is a very petite little girl weighing only about 18 pounds. While a little shy with people, she is quite secure with other dogs and has been providing lots of reassurance to Jaycee, another chocolate female Cocker currently in rescue. They could actually pass for sisters and would make an adorable pair for someone seeking to adopt two beautiful dogs! Mystique was surrendered to the Brooklyn Shelter when her family did not wish to incur the expense of correcting her double cherry eye (a benign protrusion of the third eyelid that is easily correctable with surgery). Her eyes have now been taken care of and look perfect as can be! In addition to the cherry eye, Mystique was quite neglected in her last home, coming to us with both skin and ear infections, both of which are being treated. As she is currently in heat, she is not yet ready for adoption (it will be a month or more before she can be spayed). However, we are accepting applications for her now. Mystique has been microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Mystique, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Please show this adorable girl that there is no mystique surrounding human love and kindness and that she deserves a secure and caring home.

Jaycee ~ PENDING

We have all heard the now infamous and tragic story of a little girl from California named Jaycee who was stolen from her family and hidden away for 18 years. During that time, she was subjected to unspeakable horrors, but nevertheless survived to make her way home. When we were contacted by the Brooklyn Shelter recently about a young Cocker Spaniel who had spent most of her young life locked in a closet, it brought to mind the terrible ordeal of the child we had heard about in the media. In honor of the little California girl who survived against all odds, we named this emaciated and petrified 3 year old dog Jaycee. We cannot imagine spending 3 hours in a closet, let alone 3 years, deprived for all that time of light, stimulation, food and love. Remarkably, despite it all, our Jaycee is recovering quite well. She has filled out nicely and begun to seek out the attention of her caregivers, her desire for human contact now stronger than her fear of people. She has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. All she needs now is someone to show her the meaning of home and family. If you would like to adopt our Jaycee, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Jaycee is ready to put her faith in you. May her story inspire us all to have faith in ourselves when faith is needed most.

Madden is a handsome chocolate merle Cocker Spaniel with blue eyes ... this adorable boy is just 3 years old. He was surrendered to Animal Care and Control on Staten Island when his family moved away. Madden has a wonderful temperament and could be placed in a home with dog-experienced kids ages 10 and up (he's a bit too rambunctious for toddlers). Madden is somewhat allergy-prone, but is doing well on a grain-free diet. If you would like to adopt Madden, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Madden is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He has just enjoyed a professional grooming and will go home with a new leash and collar

Vintage

UPDATE: A BIG THANK YOU TO SHANNON OF BAY RIDGE, BROOKLYN, FOR OFFERING VINTAGE A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!

BIO:

Attention collectors of all things VINTAGE!! Whether your passion is wine or antiques, you are sure to fall in love with this limited edition! Our sweet Vintage is an 8-9 year old pale blonde Cocker Spaniel with a story for the ages. You'll have to use your imagination, though, as only she knows the full tale. Vintage came to us from the Brooklyn Shelter, where she had been turned in as a badly neglected stray with severely infected ears. We've now polished her up with grooming, dentistry, and treated her ear infections. She has also been spayed, microchipped, received all of her shots and and tested negative for heartworm. However, we know enough about vintage collectibles to leave the rest alone, as the true beauty of an antique is its patina. True, our Vintage has a few dings here and there, but these are all a part of her history and make her unique. Like all precious heirlooms, Vintage longs to stay in the family forever. If you would like to offer Vintage a foster home or, better still, a forever home to call her own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Vintage is waiting to become a part of your forever collection!

Strawberry Rhubarb

Summer may be over, as is the season of berries and rhubarb, fruit cobbler and pie. But don't despair ... Strawberry Rhubarb is here ... he's our perpetual summer. This 12 year old buff male Cocker Spaniel was recently dumped at the Brooklyn pound by those he called "family". He came in covered in a severe skin infection with a fatty tumor on his chest and another on his outer ear flap, rotten teeth and badly infected ears. Despite it all, we were amazed to encounter a dog of incredibly good cheer with an aura about him akin to sunshine. His trusting eyes and smiling face simply melt the heart. Rhubarb has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He is currently being treated for his skin and ear infections and will shortly be going in both for dentistry and to have his tumors removed. If you would like to foster Rhubarb once he is ready to go home, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. We will in the meantime be posting regular updates about his progress.

Cinders ~ PENDING

LATEST UPDATE: CINDERELLA'S MAMMARY TUMOR WAS FOUND TO BE MALIGNANT, BUT DEEMED TO BE SO LOW GRADE THAT IT HAS ONLY A 1% CHANGE OF RECURRING. MOREOVER, THE LARGE TUMOR ON HER SPLEEN WAS FOUND TO BE COMPLETELY BENIGN! DESPITE ALL THIS GOOD NEWS, WE HAVE UNFORTUNATELY DISCOVERED THAT CINDERELLA HAS A HIGHLY RESISTANT FORM OF STAPH INFECTION IN BOTH EARS, FOR WHICH SHE IS BEING TREATED WITH A NEW POTENT ANTIBIOTIC. SHOULD THIS TREATMENT PROVE UNSUCCESSFUL, CINDERELLA WILL BE A CANDIDATE FOR EAR SURGERY. PLEASE KEEP CINDERS IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS AS WE STRIVE FOR HER RECOVERY!

UPDATE: A BIG THANK YOU TO DALE AND FAMILY OF WANTAUGH, NY, FOR OFFERING CINDERELLA A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME ... DALE IS CINDERELLA'S ORIGINAL "FINDER" ... HAPPILY, THEY HAVE NOW BEEN REUNITED!

Cinderella ("Cinders") is a very beautiful tri-color female Cocker Spaniel roughly 7-8 years old. She is a stunning black and white girl with tan markings just above her eyes. Cinders was recently found early one morning lying amidst debris on a construction site. She was very thin and obviously thirsty in the August heat. The construction manager immediately provided her with water and ran to buy food for her, then awaited the arrival of Animal Control. From there, Cinders made her way to the Brooklyn Shelter, where she was found to have severely infected ears as well as a tumor on her chest. As a result, she was deemed suitable only as a rescue candidate. Cinders' ears are now being treated with a potent antibiotic, to which they are responding beautifully. This week she will also be undergoing surgery to have the tumor on her chest removed, at which time she will also be spayed and have a dental. We will have the growth biopsied, but from its appearance, our vet anticipates that it will test benign. Cinders is an exceptionally sweet girl who, despite all her woes, has shown no aggression towards her handlers. She is obviously very relieved to be safe and has proven to be very trusting of everyone who has stepped up to help her. Cinders is now current on all of her shots, has been microchipped, and has also tested negative for heartworm. She will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. Cinders is a prime example of a dog who has risen from the ashes to reclaim many years of life ahead. She will make a loyal and loving companion to whoever is lucky enough to become her next owner. If you would like to adopt Cinders, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Cinders is sure to warm your soul and to light a fire in your heart.

Lila

A BIG THANK YOU TO KATE OF MAHWAH, NJ, FOR OFFERING LILLA A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!

UPDATE: WE ARE WRITING WITH A SAD UPDATE ON OUR SWEET LILLA, WHO HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH OVARIAN CANCER. ALTHOUGH OUR VET REMOVED THE CANCEROUS TISSUE, WE ARE INFORMED THAT THIS IS A RAPIDLY MOVING CANCER, HENCE LILLA'S PROGNOSIS IS NOT PARTICULARLY GOOD. HAD SHE BEEN SPAYED EARLIER IN HER LIFE, THIS DISASTER WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY AVOIDED. WE ARE LOOKING FOR A VERY SPECIAL FOSTER PLACEMENT FOR LILLA WHERE SHE CAN LIVE OUT THE REST OF HER LIFE IN SECURITY AND COMFORT, HOWEVER LONG THAT MAY BE. WE WILL NOT ALLOW HER TO SUFFER.

BIO:

Meet Lilla, a special senior who has come into Rescue just in time to help us celebrate the 4th of July ... she's our Grand Old Flag! Lilla is a healthy 12 year old who came into the Manhattan Shelter as a stray. Following a dental, removal of a benign, fatty tumor on her chest, and a (slightly overzealous) haircut, Lilla is now ready to go. She has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. Lilla is an extremely loving, sweet and gentle girl who is the "emblem of the land (and breed) we love." What better way to show your patriotism this 4th of July than to adopt a senior American Cocker Spaniel?

If you would like to offer Lilla a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call her own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. In the meantime, we'll be keeping our eye on this grand old flag!

Gustav

A BIG THANK YOU TO JEANNINE OF ROSLYN, NY, FOR OFFERING GUSTAV (AKA "GUCCI") A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!

Meet our handsome meteorologist, Gustav. A typical weather man, he is a dapper and outgoing guy. Gustav is a 6-7 year old black and white Cocker Spaniel whose coloring reminds us of a stormy weather pattern. We could not help but name him Gustav, after the infamous 2008 hurricane. There's nothing turbulent about our Gustav's nature, though. He's quite a sweet boy, but was rather neglected in his last home. When his family did not want him anymore, he was surrendered to the Manhattan pound. We've assured Gustav that rainbows always follow rainstorms ... and that, somewhere over the rainbow, a happy home awaits him. Gustav is up-to-date on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be neutered once he recovers from kennel cough, which he picked up in the shelter. Gustav will be professionally groomed before adoption and will also go home with a new leash and collar. He should make an excellent pet in an adult only home or in a home with older, dog experienced kids. Gustav seems to get along fine with other dogs, so could easily join a multiple pet household. If you would like to adopt this Al Roker of Cocker Spaniels, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Gustav will be checking his inbox daily for word of blue skies ahead.

Keller

UPDATE: A BIG THANK YOU TO PAT AND FAMILY OF DUMONT, NJ, FOR OFFERING PETEY A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME, WHICH PETEY IS SHARING WITH ROXY THE COCKER AND OODLES THE POODLE! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, PAT!

Introducing our newest "special needs" boy, who is just plain SPECIAL. Keller ("Kelley") is named after the famous Helen Keller who, like our Kelley, was also blind and deaf. Kelley came to us from Animal Care and Control in Manhattan, where he had been turned in as a stray. This poor senior Cocker (estimated to be between 8 and 10 years old) had been wandering the streets of New York City with no sights or sounds to guide him, a situation both dangerous and scary. He had a large, golfball sized tumor on his face that has since been removed and found to be benign. He has many others on his chest and abdomen that have just been removed. Sadly, one of the growths came back malignant, but was removed with clean margins; we are hopeful that the cancer will not recur. Kelley has been treated to a dental, microchipped, tested for heartworm (negative), and has received all of his shots.

Kelley is an exceptionally loving dog who will stand absolutely still and cry when he does not know where his person is. He craves the security of being by someone's side or safe in his crate, where he enjoys snuggling on his bed, often sleeping on his back, snoring away with his paws in the air (we call it the "sleep of innocence"). Kelley has an extraordinarily good temperament, so much so that he could be placed in a home with the smallest of kids. There is not a mean bone in this poor soul's body. Despite having been down, Kelley is hardly out for the count. He has the luck of the Irish (as well as Rescue) on his side. If you are someone who roots for the underdog and has a compassionate spirit, then Kelley is just the boy for you. No one will ever love or appreciate you more than a dog who sees or hears no evil (although he has experienced it first hand). To offer Kelley a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call his own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application.

Sweet Lily ~ PENDING

LATEST UPDATE: SWEET LILY HAS NOW FOUND A FOSTER HOME IN MT. PLEASANT, PA, WITH AMY AND FAMILY, WHERE SHE IS CONTINUING HER PHYSICAL RECOVERY. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, AMY!!

PLEASE HELP SWEET LILY, WHO RECENTLY COLLAPSED IN HER FOSTER HOME WITH A HERNIATED DISK THAT PARALYZED HER HIND QUARTERS. SWEET LILY WAS RUSHED TO THE VETERINARY SPECIALTY CENTER IN YONKERS, NY, WHERE SHE UNDERWENT EMERGENCY SURGERY ON HER SPINE. THE DISK IS BELIEVED TO HAVE RUPTURED AS A RESULT OF A BACK INJURY (SUCH AS A KICK) THAT OCCURED PRIOR TO HER COMING INTO RESCUE. ALTHOUGH SHE IS EXPECTED TO RECOVER FULLY, SWEET LILY'S MEDICAL BILL IS CURRENTLY $4000.00 AND CLIMBING. SWEET LILY IS NOW ABLE TO PUT WEIGHT ON HER HIND QUARTERS AND IS ATTEMPTING TO WALK, BUT HAS MANY MONTHS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY AND REHAB AHEAD OF HER. PLEASE HELP SWEET LILY BY MAKING A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION TOWARDS HER CARE VIA PAYPAL TO RECIPIENT EMAIL ADDRESS DONATION@NYABANDONEDANGELS.COM. DONATIONS MAY ALSO BE MADE BY CHECK PAYABLE TO "ABANDONED ANGELS" AND SENT TO PO BOX 545426, FLUSHING, NY 11354. PLEASE KEEP SWEET LILY IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS!

Sweet Lily is a 2 year old buff Cocker Spaniel with a natural (undocked) tail. This little beauty came into the Brooklyn Shelter as a stray, where she naturally became rather scared and upset. Now in Rescue, she has begun to settle down and feel safe. Sweet Lily has actually proven to be a very loving and loyal dog who simply needed a bit of time to bond with her new caregivers. Once she trusts, she becomes man's best friend. We are inclined to think that Sweet Lily would do best in an adult only home, preferably one with prior Cocker Spaniel experience, where she can receive a lot of reassurance and TLC. The first couple years of her life having been rather rough, she now deserves to be treated like a little princess. Sweet Lily has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to offer Sweet Lily another chance at love, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Spring having just arrived, the sweet scent of lilies will soon be in the air ... so now is surely our Sweet Lily's time to flower.

Bocelli

A BIG THANK YOU TO BETH AND FAMILY OF WESTFIELD, MA FOR OFFERING BOCELLI A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME, WHICH BOCELLI IS SHARING WITH BETH'S OWN COCKER SPANIEL. BETH REPORTS THAT BOCELLI IS DOING GREAT, WALKING WELL ON A LEASH, AND FINDING HIS WAY AROUND WITH HIS NEW COCKER SISTER AS A GUIDE. THANK YOU, BETH!

BIO:

Bocelli is a handsome chocolate and white Cocker Spaniel who is a dignified 10 years old. Like Andreas Bocelli, the famous opera singer, our Bocelli is completely blind (he has cataracts in both eyes, for which nothing can be done). Bocelli came to us from the Brooklyn Shelter, where he had been turned in as an owner surrender. We can only imagine how confusing Bocelli's shelter experience must have been for him. When a dog gradually goes blind in his or her own home, at least the animal knows the lay of the land from memory. But once he was surrendered to the city pound, Bocelli would have had no familiar landmarks, smells or sounds to guide him. His experience would have been one of simply being lost in the dark, surrounded by the unknown. Other than his blindness, Bocelli is a very healthy boy. He is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, has tested negative for heartworm, and will shortly be treated to a dental. All he needs now is to be loved. If you would like to offer Bocelli a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call his own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Experience with blind dogs would obviously be helpful, but is not essential. As one might imagine, blind dogs have exceptionally keen hearing. Bocelli is listening intently for the footsteps of his new family, coming to bring him home. We've told him not to worry, you are on your way.

King of Hearts

Meet the King of Hearts ... he might just be your ace in the hole. This 4 year old buff male Cocker Spaniel was turned into the Manhattan Shelter as an owner surrender, as his mom was expecting a new baby and did not believe this heartbreaker would do well with young kids. We believe our King of Hearts would in fact prefer an adult only home, preferably one with prior Cocker Spaniel experience. The King of Hearts has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like fortune on your side, then the King of Hearts may just be your lucky card. To adopt him, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application.

Wallaby

A BIG THANK YOU TO KAREN AND MICHAEL OF BABYLON, NY, FOR OFFERING WALLY A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME, WHICH WALLY IS SHARING WITH NELSON THE COCKER AND EMMITT THE CAT!

Hello, my name is Wallaby and there are a lot of things I wannabe ... among them, the light of your life, your protector, and your best friend. I am a 3 year old purebred Cocker Spaniel with a natural (undocked) tail. Until I came into Rescue, I did not experience much of anything good in life. Most people were quite unkind to me, hence my ability to trust was badly impaired. Sad though it may be, I truly did not know what it meant to love or be loved. I was bounced from one home to the next, and every time I came to a new place, I hoped that someone there would treat me as a cherished friend. Sadly, that was not to be. After just one month in my last home, I was surrendered to the Manhattan pound. There were no takers there for me either, so I was surrendered to Abandoned Angels. In this place called Rescue, I have finally found a soft spot to lay my weary head, safe in the knowledge that no one will mistreat me in any way. Slowly, slowly, I have begun to trust those around me. One day, after many weeks, I felt something new and unusual in my heart, which I somehow realized must be love for those volunteers who have been caring for me. Everyday, they ask me the same important question: "Wallaby, who do you wannabe?" For a long time, I did not know the answer. But then one day, it came to me, gently making its way into my subconscious as I dreamed a perfect dream, the one I used to have as a very small puppy. When I woke, I suddenly knew what I wanted in life and who I wanted to be. Looking up at my caregivers, I relayed the answer through eyes that were no longer just sad, but at long last somewhat hopeful: "After all I have been through, I still wannabe someone's treasured pet. I want the gift of unconditional love."

If you can offer me your whole heart, then I am prepared to put my paw in your trustworthy hand, either as a foster dog or as an adopted member of your family. I am neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and have tested negative for heartworm. I will go home professionally groomed and with a new leash and collar. If you would like to take my leash in your hand and lead the way to my new beginning, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. I will be checking my inbox daily.

Love (at long last),

Wallaby

Only Oni

A BIG THANK YOU TO GLENDA OF BAYSIDE, NY, FOR OFFERING ONI A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!

Meet Oni, the world's most adorable little troll. When we first met him, Oni was clearly having a hard time. He was turned into Manhattan Animal Care and Control as a stray with a nasty, bloody cyst in his ear that was giving him a lot of grief. One would have thought our little gremlin would have been irritable given the discomfort he was in, but not Oni. He was very happy for us to take him in our arms as we lifted him from his upper level cage, and then joined us for a little walk in the afternoon sunshine. With every step of his stocky little body, Oni seemed to be telling the world how invincible he is (maybe a little down on his luck, but hardly out for the count). As best we can tell, Oni is a Beagle/Cocker cross who exemplifies the best of both breeds. He is a stoic little fellow with a wonderful temperament and, unlike many beagles, not a barker. He would do wonderfully well in a home with kids and will make the quintessential family pet. Oni seems to love everyone he meets (people and pets included) and to have life by the tail. Oni is about 7 years old and has many years of life and love to devote to a new family. He is predominantly black with a white mask on his face that gives him the appearance of having dipped his muzzle in a bowl of sugar (yes, he's really that sweet). Oni has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. That nasty cyst has now been removed from his ear and we've treated him to a dental. Oni's hearing is absolutely perfect, as is everything else about him. Ever the optimist, Oni has trotted off for a professional grooming and donned a new leash and collar. He's checking his inbox daily and is all ready to join his new family. If you would like to adopt Oni, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. If you Only Have Eyes for Oni, we can hardly blame you. We're quite in love with him ourselves!

Gwynevere

A BIG THANK YOU TO PATTY AND FAMILY OF MEXICO, NY FOR OFFERING GWENNIE A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME! GWENNIE WILL SURELY BE ENJOYING THE HOLIDAY SEASON THIS YEAR ... THANK YOU, PATTY!

LATEST UPDATE: Sadly, Gwynevere was adopted out to a loving family in PA but was returned after several months. While Gwennie is described as being EXTREMELY LOVING towards her family, she does not like strangers, which is proving problematic, as the household is an active one, with lots of people coming and going. We believe that Gwennie's snippiness around people is due in no small part to infections in both ears, which are currently being treated. Nevertheless, we are looking to re-home Gwennie in an adult only household where visitors are infrequent and where the activity level is low.

UPDATE: Gwynevere has recovered completely and is now READY FOR ADOPTION!! From the way she frolicks with the rest of the pack in her foster home, one would never know that she was ever injured. Gwennie is doing great and now just needs a place to call her forever home. Gwennie would be a super match for someone looking for a sweet buff female Cocker Spaniel in the prime of her life. Gwennie has been spayed, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She is now a completely healthy girl.

BIO: Gwynevere is a beautiful 7 year old pale buff Cocker Spaniel. This damsel in distress found herself suffering with a dislocated hip at Manhattan Animal Control, where she languished in a cage for over a month. We do not know how the injury occurred, only that her family brought her in for euthanasia. While Animal Control could not summon King Arthur and his Knights to come to Gwynevere's aid, they tried many rescue groups and finally found a place for her with Abandoned Angels. While Gwynevere does require orthopedic surgery, she is expected to recover fully. Last year we had a dog pass through our doors who required surgery for an identical injury and he came through it like a champ. These days he spends his days frolicking on the beach and surfing waves in North Carolina. We are of course hoping for an equally happy ending for Gwynevere. Gwynevere will require several weeks of cage rest after surgery, but should be ready for adoption in early January. If you would like to be Gwynevere's Knight in Shining Armor, please contact us to discuss her further.

Winston

A BIG THANK YOU TO CAROL OF MANHATTAN FOR OFFERING WINSTON A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!

Hello, my name is Winston. I am a handsome 4-5 year old purebred Cocker Spaniel. I am ready for adoption now! I will devote my heart and soul to my new family and fill their lives with love, all that I ask in return is that they take good care of me - especially important is that I receive a monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventative. While I am now a very healthy boy, I was previously very neglected. I am neutered, microchipped, up-to-date with all shots, and will be professionally groomed prior to adoption. I would do best in an experienced Cocker Spaniel home where my new owner will take my neglected background into account and give me time to settle in and demonstrate what a good dog I can be. We need to build trust together, which will not happen overnight. I could be placed in an adult only home or in a home with very mature, older kids who have lots of dog experience (little kids tend to overwhelm me). I can be rather unsure of myself in new environments and around strangers, but once I feel secure, I am just the best boy ever. If you would like to open your heart and home to me, please request an application from Abandoned Angels at rescue@nyabandonedangels.com ... I'll be waiting to hear from you. Please give me a chance! Love, Winston XXOO

Pokey

UPDATE: FOLLOWING A VISIT WITH A LEADING OPTHALMOLOGIST, WE HAVE LEARNED THAT POKEY HAS LOST MOST OF HIS VISION DUE TO JUVENILE CATARACTS. HIS WORLD IS NOW A SHADOWY, SCARY PLACE FOR HIM, WHICH WOULD ACCOUNT FOR HIS SKITTISH NATURE AND FEAR OF STRANGERS. WE HOPE TO RAISE SUFFICIENT FUNDS TO PROVIDE POKEY WITH CATARACT SURGERY ON BOTH EYES. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A DONATION TOWARDS POKEY'S FUNDRAISING EFFORT, PLEASE SEND A DONATION VIA PAYPAL TO THE FOLLOWING RECIPIENT ADDRESS: DONATION@NYABANDONEDANGELS.COM (PLEASE INDICATE THAT YOUR DONATION IS "FOR POKEY").

BIO: Pokey is a purebred black Cocker Spaniel with a splash of white on his chest (the quintessential Pilgrim outfit) is just 2 years old. Pokey was an owner surrender to the Brooklyn shelter. No specific reasons were provided when he was given up ... his family said they just did not want him anymore. A lame excuse if ever there was one! Now that Cocker Rescue has gotten to know him, we feel that Pokey would do best in a quiet, adult only home. Too many people coming and going tends to confuse him. Pokey would do well with an experienced Cocker Spaniel family who will not be overwhelmed by his quirks (he can get feisty with strangers, which is something that his new owners should be prepared to work on). Pokey is a good little dog but has the potential to be a fabulous dog ... he just needs a little guidance and firm but gentle discipline. Pokey is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be professionally groomed before going home and will also come with a new leash and collar. If you are an experienced Cocker Spaniel owner and have room in your heart and home for Pokey, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Pokey will make a wonderful new addition with whom to celebrate the holidays this year and for many years to come.

A BIG THANK YOU TO GAIL OF KERHONKSON, NY FOR OFFERING POKEY A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!

Cody

UPDATE: CODY HAS RECENTLY TORN A CRUCIATE IN A REAR LEG AND IS ALSO UNDERGOING TREATMENT FOR A HIGHLY RESISTANT FORM OF STAPH INFECTION. HE IS NOT A CANDIDATE FOR ADOPTION AT THIS TIME.

Cody is a handsome parti-colored Clumber Spaniel/Cocker Spaniel cross who has just turned 6 years old. He is a big, imposing boy with a heart of gold. Cody came to us as an owner surrender after his Dad suffered a stroke and could no longer care for him. Cody is a very loving and playful boy who is happiest when he is receiving loads of attention. He might best be described as a "total ham." Cody will do best in an experienced, adult only Spaniel home where someone has a lot of time to devote to him. As Cody truly yearns to be "man's best friend," we believe he would do exceptionally well with a male owner. Although Cody enjoys the company of other dogs, he would enjoy being the only pet and the center of someone's canine universe. Cody is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. He has been fully vet checked, including bloodwork and a dental. He passed with flying colors and is a very healthy boy. If you would like to adopt Cody, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Cody is waiting to rock your world!

Moo-moo

Moo-Moo has been an Abandoned Angel for a couple of years now. Moo-Moo came into rescue as a senior after having been abandoned at the Brooklyn shelter by the family with whom he had spent his entire life. Eventually he made his way to New England, where we found foster placement for him on a farm. Sadly, due to illness and other family problems, his foster became unable to care for him, whereupon Moo-Moo was returned to rescue. Moo-Moo enjoys the country life, but does require an experienced foster and would do best in a cocker savvy home. He is about 13 years old now and can get a little cranky. Among other things, he requires regular ear maintenance, which he can be relied upon to vehemently protest! Moo-moo is neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like to foster Moo-Moo, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Moo-Moo is sure to love you until the cows come home!
