Meet our little Wimbledon champ ... an adorable 3 year old Cocker Spaniel named Boris (after Boris Becker, of course). Like the famous pro, our Boris will turn a somersault in pursuit of a tennis ball, but has such grace and talent that he can win without a racket. He's the most playful guy around and the quintessential sportsman. Boris was turned into the Brooklyn Shelter as a stray who went unclaimed. Despite the kennel cough he contracted, we immediately recognized Boris as a champ. Boris is now hitting the court with the rest of the gang in Rescue, where there are plenty of tennis balls to go around. Once he recovers from his cold, Boris will be neutered and treated to a dental. In the meantime, he has been microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to perfect your swing with Boris by your side, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Boris is waiting to put some "love" back in your game.
Goldie Lox (Loxy)
Goldie Lox ("Loxy") is a beautiful 3 year old buff Cocker Spaniel who came into the Brooklyn Shelter as a stray. She can best be described as a kissable, hugable "wiggle butt" who loves to roll over onto her back for belly rubs. Loxy is just as sweet as they come, so much so that she could be placed with the smallest of kids. She will make a WONDERFUL FAMILY PET! Loxy has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like to adopt Loxy, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Loxy is waiting to hear from you!
Betsy
Meet Betsy, a special senior who has come into Rescue just in time to help us celebrate the 4th of July ... she's our Grand Old Flag! Betsy is a healthy 12 year old who came into the Manhattan Shelter as a stray. Following a dental, removal of a benign, fatty tumor on her chest, and a (slightly overzealous) haircut, Betsy is right as rain and ready to go. She has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. Betsy is an extremely loving, sweet and gentle girl who is the "emblem of the land (and breed) we love." What better way to show your patriotism this 4th of July than to adopt a senior American Cocker Spaniel?
Below are the words written by George Cohan, a Civil War veteran, in tribute to the American Flag (originally stitched together by Philadelphia's most famous sister, Betsy Ross):
You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
But should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
If you would like to offer Betsy a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call her own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. In the meantime, we'll be keeping our eye on this grand old flag!
Cubby
Cubby is a handsome 8 month old Cocker Spaniel puppy whose family surrendered him to the Manhattan Shelter when they simply lost interest in their pet. Cubby reminds us of a kid in kindergarten - he's always on the go, full of energy and, of course, is prone to puppy mischief. Cubby is super cuddly and loves to nibble on one's fingers in typical puppy fashion ... he may even be the world's best kisser. Cubby has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. Cubby will make great company at your holiday barbecue this 4th of July and is ready to enjoy a burger and hot dog with the rest of the crowd. If you would like to adopt Cubby, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. This star spangled Cocker is waiting to hear from you!
Precious Angel
Precious Angel is a 2 year old purebred Cocker Spaniel who came into the Manhattan Shelter as an owner surrender. Precious Angel is a beautiful buff girl with a wonderful temperament who will make an excellent family pet. She gets along well with other dogs, so could easily join a multiple pet household. Precious Angel has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. She will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Precious Angel, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. This precious girl is waiting to hear from you!
Beauty aka Pebbles
Beauty is a gorgeous red and white purebred Cocker Spaniel with an undocked tail. She is just 3 years old. Beauty was owned by a military family from Long Island who were called to duty, as a result of which Beauty lost her home. Beauty is a WONDERFUL FAMILY DOG who has lived with multiple children under the age of seven. She will make a great pet for a family with young kids. Beauty gets along well with other dogs, so could easily join a multiple pet household. There is no Beast in this Beauty, who appears to have no aggression whatsoever. Beauty has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She is also FULLY HOUSEBROKEN. If you would like to adopt Beauty, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Beauty is waiting to hear from you! Beauty is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
Gustav
Meet our handsome meteorologist, Gustav. A typical weather man, he is a dapper and outgoing guy. Gustav is a 6-7 year old black and white Cocker Spaniel whose coloring reminds us of a stormy weather pattern. We could not help but name him Gustav, after the infamous 2008 hurricane. There's nothing turbulent about our Gustav's nature, though. He's quite a sweet boy, but was rather neglected in his last home. When his family did not want him anymore, he was surrendered to the Manhattan pound. We've assured Gustav that rainbows always follow rainstorms ... and that, somewhere over the rainbow, a happy home awaits him. Gustav is up-to-date on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be neutered once he recovers from kennel cough, which he picked up in the shelter. Gustav will be professionally groomed before adoption and will also go home with a new leash and collar. He should make an excellent pet in an adult only home or in a home with older, dog experienced kids. Gustav seems to get along fine with other dogs, so could easily join a multiple pet household. If you would like to adopt this Al Roker of Cocker Spaniels, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Gustav will be checking his inbox daily for word of blue skies ahead.
Bambi
Who's the pretty blonde with the doe-like eyes? This newcomer to Rescue is called Bambi. She is about a year old and came to us from the Manhattan Shelter, where she was turned in as an owner surrender. Bambi is a shy and sweet girl with a natural (undocked) tail who may become a bit skittish when frightened. She needs a calm and quiet home where someone can provide her with some much-needed stability and reassurance. We would prefer an adult only home, or a home with older, dog-experienced kids (12 and up) for Bambi. She would do best in an environment where the activity level is generally low. Bambi has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Bambi, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Bambi is waiting to hear from you.
Woody
My name is Woody. I am a 5-6 year old purebred Cocker Spaniel who was turned into the Manhattan Shelter as a stray. Like many a Cocker before me, I became scared and upset in the Shelter environment, with the result that I received a poor behavioral assessment. The truth is, I am just a very sensitive soul, and my frazzled nerves simply could not take the noise, fear, and confusion inherent in a shelter environment. Once I was labelled a difficult case, my adoption prospects were non-existent. I kept asking for someone to understand what I was going through and sympathize, but sadly no one would. Then I developed kennel cough and was slated for euthanasia. I thought I had met my end for sure when, suddenly, I was pulled back from the brink!! Thanks to Rescue, I am now safe and secure in a foster home, where I am finally showing my true colors. I am a very sweet dog with a gentle nature who gets along well with other pets. I have so far met some older kids and have behaved beautifully with them. I am currently overcoming kennel cough, following which I will be neutered, will have a tiny cherry eye repaired, and also receive a dental. In the meantime, I have received all of my shots and am current on my heartworm test. I will make a wonderful companion for someone who leads a low-key lifestyle and is looking for a quiet dog to love and cherish. If you would like to adopt me, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. I will be checking my email inbox daily. With lots of love in the meantime, Woody XXOO. Woody is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered
Copper Penny
A BIG THANK YOU TO DEB OF STATEN ISLAND FOR OFFERING COPPER PENNY A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME.
BIO:
Copper Penny is a very beautiful reddish brown Cocker Spaniel just 3 years old. Copper Penny was surrendered to the Staten Island shelter after having bitten a child, following which she was beaten by her owners with such severity that she was bruised from head to toe. We do not know what precipitated the bite, but we cannot believe that Copper Penny was to blame. After extensive interraction, we have found her to be a very mild girl. Since the beating, Copper Penny has become very shy and fearful. She flinches when approached and may crouch down on the ground, as if hoping to go unnoticed. Although clearly afraid, she exhibits no aggression when being handled. Once she understands that she will not be hurt, she comes around quite quickly. Copper Penny loves to be petted and will roll onto her back for a belly rub once trust has been established. Given her history, Copper Penny will obviously require an adult only home, but is sure to prove a loyal companion to someone who will treat her with care and compassion. She would also prefer to be the only dog in the home. Copper Penny was unlucky in love in her first family, but we still believe her to be a lucky coin. Copper Penny has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like to adopt Copper Penny, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Copper Penny is waiting to hear from you.
Bogie
Bogie is a handsome 2 year old rust-colored Cocker Spaniel with adorable white markings. Bogie was recently surrendered to Rescue by his family, as the activity level in his home had begun to completely stress him out. At a recent sleepover party where twenty 9 year old shrieking girls were present, Bogie became overwhelmed and snapped at some of the kids. One can hardly blame him, as any parent who's been run ragged at a sleepover can attest. Although sleepovers obviously do not occur everyday, Mom and Dad nevertheless concluded that Bogie would likely fare better in an adult only environment, or perhaps in a home with older, dog experienced kids. As we have found many Cockers to be quite sensitive, we are inclined to agree. Bogie is a very healthy, friendly boy who has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like to offer Bogie a place to hang his trench coat and fedora, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. While Bogie is sad about the turn of events in his life, he believes "a kiss is just a kiss" and that more love is just around the corner. Upon meeting his new family, he's sure to say, "Here's looking at you, Kid." In the meantime, he'll be checking his inbox daily.
Keller
Introducing our newest "special needs" boy, who is just plain SPECIAL. Keller ("Kelley") is named after the famous Helen Keller who, like our Kelley, was also blind and deaf. Kelley came to us from Animal Care and Control in Manhattan, where he had been turned in as a stray. This poor senior Cocker (estimated to be between 8 and 10 years old) had been wandering the streets of New York City with no sights or sounds to guide him, a situation both dangerous and scary. He had a large, golfball sized tumor on his face that has since been removed and found to be benign. He has many others on his chest and abdomen which will be taken off at the time of his neuter and biopsied as well. We will be updating his profile with the results once the lab tests come back. In the meantime, Kelley has been treated to a dental, microchipped, tested for heartworm (negative), and has received all of his shots.
Kelley is an exceptionally loving dog who will stand absolutely still and cry when he does not know where his person is. He craves the security of being by someone's side or safe in his crate, where he enjoys snuggling on his bed, often sleeping on his back, snoring away with his paws in the air (we call it the "sleep of innocence"). Kelley has an extraordinarily good temperament, so much so that he could be placed in a home with the smallest of kids. There is not a mean bone in this poor soul's body. Despite having been down, Kelley is hardly out for the count. He has the luck of the Irish (as well as Rescue) on his side. If you are someone who roots for the underdog and has a compassionate spirit, then Kelley is just the boy for you. No one will ever love or appreciate you more than a dog who sees or hears no evil (although he has experienced it first hand). To offer Kelley a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call his own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Keller is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

"The Prince of Tides"
What else to name an ultra-regal young water fowl dog but the Prince of Tides? Our Prince is a handsome 6 year old black and tan Cocker Spaniel who first passed through our rescue as a young boy from the Brooklyn pound. He was adopted out to a loving mother and daughter from Maine (his devoted mom and grandmom), both of whom spoiled him silly. He was so adored that this pauper Prince soon grew accustomed to living like a King! But then grandma died and, soon after, his mom fell ill. No longer able care for him, his mom returned Prince to rescue with a heavy heart. We have promised to find him another loving home. Prince is a very devoted dog who wants to be the center of his person's world. He is not always keen to share attention, so would likely be happiest as the only pet. Prince would also benefit from a strong leader to show him the way. After all, to become a wise Monarch, every Prince needs a High Counselor.
Prince has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He has recently had a professional grooming and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt Prince, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Open your heart and home to Prince and love will surely flow in like the Tide.
Buster
Buster is a handsome 3 year old purebred Cocker Spaniel whose coloring reminds us of saddle shoes ... the "Buster Browns" that so many of us used to wear as kids. He is a handsome black and white boy with lots of patches and speckles running through his coat. Buster is quite a petite male who weighs just 20 pounds. Buster lost his home due to the arrival of a new human baby in the family. Sadly, his mom and dad concluded that there was just not enough time or money to go around and decided that Buster had to go. Buster is a playful and loving dog who should make an excellent family pet in a home with slightly older kids (we would suggest age 12 and up). He gets along fine with other dogs and should be good with cats as well. While he has so far not been particularly playful with other animals, he seems content to co-exist with them. Buster has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He has just enjoyed a professional grooming and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you hold the key to Buster's future and are ready to set him free, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Buster is ready to bust out of rescue now!
Sir Max
Sir Max is a 9 year old purebred English Cocker Spaniel who was surrendered a local shelter by his owner due to her own terminal illness. She was weeping hysterically at the time of his surrender. From the expression on Max's face, it is clear that he continues to grieve for her. Sir Max came to us with a severe infection in one ear, which we initially thought might require surgery. Fortunately, we have been successful in saving the ear. Sir Max is now a very healthy boy, although as an older dog he does have some stiffness in his joints, for which he is taking Cosequin. Sir Max would do best in an adult only home, perhaps with a single woman, as he is accustomed to being the center of his former mom's world. Sir Max has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like to offer Sir Max a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call his own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Sir Max will be checking his email inbox daily.
Gulliver
Gulliver is a handsome 6-7 year old black Cocker Spaniel with a bit of white on his muzzle and chest who was found as a stray on Long Island. When his owners could not be found, Gulliver was surrendered to rescue. Gulliver is an extremely sweet dog who is good with people and other animals. He is fully housebroken and very gentle, so could wear a variety of hats ... whether family dog or companion to an older person. Gulliver has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like to help Gulliver end his Travels, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Gulliver is waiting to hear from you!
Gulliver is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
Chayanne
Hello, my name is Chayanne, and this is a courtesy posting for my rescuer, Lucy. Lucy found me on a busy highway a few weeks ago, where I was dodging cars. Of course she stopped and took me out of harm's way. I have been hanging my hat at Lucy's place since then. At first she looked diligently for my owners, but when it became clear that no one would be claiming me, Lucy contacted rescue with a view to re-homing me. Unfortunately, Lucy works long hours, so I am often alone and that makes me unhappy. Would you like to make me a part of your family? I am a handsome buff boy and thought to be about 6 years old. I have been neutered, microchipped, am up-to-date on all shots, and have tested negative for heartworm. I will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to adopt me, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Lucy and I will be waiting to hear from you!
Your Friend,
Chayanne
Remington Steele
Meet Remington Steele, the most debonaire of private eyes who also has a nose that knows. Remington was found as a stray in a rural upstate area and surrendered to rescue when his owners could not be found. He is a handsome red and white boy with a natural (undocked) tail that he loves to swish like a giant feather. Remington is a very happy, friendly boy who should do fine in a home with older, dog-experienced kids (he is a might too energetic for toddlers). He does beautifully with other dogs and would likely be fine with cats (but might chase initially, like any investigator in hot pursuit of a lead). Remington has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to play "I Spy" with Remington Steele, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Remington is waiting to hear from you!
Willy
Willy is a handsome 10 year old buff male Cocker Spaniel who recently came into the Manhattan Shelter as a stray. What a sad graduation to life as a senior, to be deemed unworthy of living out one's golden years as a member of the family and to be cruelly dumped on the streets of New York City. Sadder still is the fact that Willy has the most FABULOUS TEMPERAMENT - so there can be no lame excuses for having treated him with such disregard. Willy will make a WONDERFUL FAMILY PET, so much so that he could easily be placed in a home with kids. Despite all he has been through, he has no aggression whatsoever. Willy has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. We have treated him to a much-needed dental, a professional grooming and a new leash and collar. Willy is now ready to go home ... could that home be yours? Whoever adopts him will have won the canine lotto, so now's the time to give lady luck her chance. If you would like to adopt Willy, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Willy is waiting to hear from you!
Sweet Lily - PENDING
Sweet Lily is a 2 year old buff Cocker Spaniel with a natural (undocked) tail. This little beauty came into the Brooklyn Shelter as a stray, where she naturally became rather scared and upset. Now in Rescue, she has begun to settle down and feel safe. Sweet Lily has actually proven to be a very loving and loyal dog who simply needed a bit of time to bond with her new caregivers. Once she trusts, she becomes man's best friend. We are inclined to think that Sweet Lily would do best in an adult only home, preferably one with prior Cocker Spaniel experience, where she can receive a lot of reassurance and TLC. The first couple years of her life having been rather rough, she now deserves to be treated like a little princess. Sweet Lily has been spayed, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to offer Sweet Lily another chance at love, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Spring having just arrived, the sweet scent of lilies will soon be in the air ... so now is surely our Sweet Lily's time to flower.
Chere and Henri
Chere and Henri are a deeply bonded pair of Cocker Spaniels who are hoping to remain together. Chere is a 6 year old black female and Henri is a 5 year old buff male. Chere and Henri lost their home when their elderly owner became too feeble to care for them. They were shipped up from Florida to live with some extended family in the New York City area, but the arrangement has not worked out well. The Cockers are not fond of the family's 14 year old Maltese, who is blind and frightened of them. Henri is also a bit nippy with the family's youngest child. We believe that their behavior has much to do with missing their home in Florida and the undivided attention their owner provided, as these dogs were truly the center of her world. However, in the circumstances, it would be best for Chere and Henri to be re-homed. We believe they would do best in an adult only household without other dogs, or perhaps with dogs who are larger than they are. Chere and Henri are both about 40 pounds. They are somewhat overweight due to inadequate exercise and too many treats, but should slim down nicely with regular brisk walks and a reduced calorie dog food. Chere and Henri are spayed/neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and have tested negative for heartworm. They will both be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. For the time being, we are seeking to place Chere and Henri in the same home and are willing to reduce their combined adoption fees in order to keep them together. If you would like to adopt this pair of sweethearts, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Chere and Henri will be checking their inbox daily.
Bocelli
A BIG THANK YOU TO BETH AND FAMILY OF WESTFIELD, MA FOR OFFERING BOCELLI A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME, WHICH BOCELLI IS SHARING WITH BETH'S OWN COCKER SPANIEL. BETH REPORTS THAT BOCELLI IS DOING GREAT, WALKING WELL ON A LEASH, AND FINDING HIS WAY AROUND WITH HIS NEW COCKER SISTER AS A GUIDE. THANK YOU, BETH!
BIO:
Bocelli is a handsome chocolate and white Cocker Spaniel who is a dignified 10 years old. Like Andreas Bocelli, the famous opera singer, our Bocelli is completely blind (he has cataracts in both eyes, for which nothing can be done). Bocelli came to us from the Brooklyn Shelter, where he had been turned in as an owner surrender. We can only imagine how confusing Bocelli's shelter experience must have been for him. When a dog gradually goes blind in his or her own home, at least the animal knows the lay of the land from memory. But once he was surrendered to the city pound, Bocelli would have had no familiar landmarks, smells or sounds to guide him. His experience would have been one of simply being lost in the dark, surrounded by the unknown. Other than his blindness, Bocelli is a very healthy boy. He is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, has tested negative for heartworm, and will shortly be treated to a dental. All he needs now is to be loved. If you would like to offer Bocelli a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call his own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Experience with blind dogs would obviously be helpful, but is not essential. As one might imagine, blind dogs have exceptionally keen hearing. Bocelli is listening intently for the footsteps of his new family, coming to bring him home. We've told him not to worry, you are on your way.
Rex- PENDING
Rex Ryan is a handsome 3-4 year old red Cocker Spaniel with a splash of white on his chest. He is a real football afficianado - the New York Jets being his favorite team, of course. Rex came to us from the Manhattan Shelter, where he was turned in as an owner surrender. The reason given was lack of time. Rex received a "no concern" on his shelter evaluation, so should make an excellent family pet. He'd love to spend time in the backyard with kids as they throw passes to one another ... no one will cheer louder than Rex when one of them scores a touchdown! Rex is a very healthy boy who is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and heartworm negative. He has just had surgery to correct double cherry eye (a slight protrusion of the third eyelid, which is common in Cocker Spaniels). His eyes are a little bit puffy right now, but within a week or two they will look cosmetically just great. Rex will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you are looking for a great companion with whom to watch the game - whoever your favorite team may be - Rex Ryan is surely the dog for you. To adopt Rex, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Rex is waiting to hear from you (or perhaps your agent).
King of Hearts
Meet the King of Hearts ... he might just be your ace in the hole. This 4 year old buff male Cocker Spaniel was turned into the Manhattan Shelter as an owner surrender, as his mom was expecting a new baby and did not believe this heartbreaker would do well with young kids. We believe our King of Hearts would in fact prefer an adult only home, preferably one with prior Cocker Spaniel experience. The King of Hearts has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you would like fortune on your side, then the King of Hearts may just be your lucky card. To adopt him, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application.
Little Max
A BIG THANK YOU TO JOHN AND NANCY FOR OFFERING LITTLE MAX A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME IN UPSTATE NEW YORK!
BIO:
Little Max is a 15 pound Cockapoo who found himself surrendered to the Brooklyn Shelter at 12 years of age. If you too have seen your 401(k) go up in smoke, you may appreciate how Max felt ... this was hardly the gentle retirement he was expecting. Little Max was matted to the skin, in desperate need of dentistry, and also had a tumor on his abdomen. We were at the Shelter evaluating some Cocker Spaniels and, seeing what desperate straits he was in, felt unable to leave him behind. We figured that Rescue must somehow rally, even when financial markets don't. All of Little Max's medical needs have now been addressed (including his tumor, which has proven to be benign). Little Max is also receiving a daily dose of Cosequin for arthritis, and a little Soloxine to even out his thyroid levels. He has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. Little Max now has a spring to his step and is clearly feeling bullish about the future. He believes that now is the time for the bear to sleep. If you would like to adopt Little Max, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Although he agrees that we live in a confusing era, Little Max's inner wisdom draws optimism to the fore. He knows that, especially when there are no answers to life's troubling questions, the best immediate solution may be a nice good walk.
Bentley
A BIG THANK YOU TO KATE AND FAMILY FOR OFFERING BENTLEY A PLACE IN THEIR COCKER PACK. BENTLEY IS HANGING HIS HAT IN SUBURBAN NJ, WHERE KATE REPORTS THAT HE IS DOING JUST GREAT.
BIO:
Have you heard the news? In the current economic climate, it's considered "unfashionable" to be seen behind the wheel of a Rolls or a Bentley. Even those who can afford it have put the private jet away, as it just "does not look right" to be "flaunting it" in the light of global financial woe. Whether you are among those who have opted to put the fancy car away (or take the bus for other reasons) we have the perfect alternative: four paws instead of four tires! It's the Other Bentley, an adorable 5 year old buff and white Cocker Spaniel with some of the longest ears we have ever seen. He may not hug the road, but he will provide lots of hugs (literally). Our Bentley is incredibly affectionate, with a personality like sunshine. You'll be immediately smitten, we can almost guarantee it. Bentley has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. We have treated him both to a dental as well as to a professional grooming, both of which he badly needed. If you would like to adopt Bentley, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. There could be nothing more politically correct than owning this particular Bentley right now. In fact, with Bentley at your side, you'll find yourself quite proud to be hoofing it.
Mistletoe
A BIG THANK YOU TO MELISSA OF CONNECTICUT FOR OFFERING MISTLETOE A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME.
BIO:
Hello, my name is Mistletoe ... this Christmas season, I hope to enjoy chestnuts roasting by an open fire, with Jack Frost nipping at my nose. I am quite happy to let it snow ... as long as I have someplace warm and safe to go.
My Christmas wish has not been representative of my recent experience, but I know that things can change in the bat of an eye. I had a home once, in my mind's eye I can see it still, but then one day, at the age of 14, I found myself on the streets of New York City. I was alone, it was cold and dark, and I could not find my way back home. My little heart was beating with fear (I have a heart murmur, you see, so I felt my sense of doom all that more acutely). I ran from street to street, from place to place, hungry and tired, too afraid to stop and rest. A kind passerby finally spotted me and called Manhattan ACC to come for me. Once at the shelter, I was placed in a cage with a blanket to warm my thin and weary body and given food and water. Then I began my wait. As the days slipped by, I wondered if I would ever see the familiar face of a beloved family member peeking into my cage, with tears of relief in their eyes at having finally found me. But this happy ending was not to be. I waited and waited, but no one came, until at long last I did see a kind but unknown face of a person who offered me a place in Rescue.
I have a beautiful new name now, "Mistletoe," and I now await my new future. I wonder if, at my age, anyone will ever offer me the opportunity to be loved again. I long to lie at the feet of someone who will take the time to stroke my head and reassure me, as we soak in the scent of roasting chestnuts and the warmth of an evening fire. This is my dream for the twilight of my life.
If you would like to offer me a foster home or, better still, an adoptive home to call my own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. I am microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, have tested negative for heartworm, and will shortly be treated to a dental. As you can see, I am all ready to go home and become your fireside companion ... so let it snow, let it snow, let it snow, just as long as I, at long last, have a happy place to go.
Mickey
MICKEY IS NOT READY FOR ADOPTION AT THIS TIME.
A BIG THANK YOU TO BONNIE OF DINGMANS FERRY, PA, FOR OFFERING MICKEY A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME. MICKEY IS ENJOYING LIFE AT "CAMP BONNIE" IN THE COMPANY OF BONNIE'S OTHER DOGS, BONNIE IS A GREAT FRIEND TO DOGS IN NEED AND ESPECIALLY TO ABANDONED ANGELS ... THANK YOU, BONNIE!
BIO:
Mickey is an adorable white Toy Poodle/Bichon cross about 1 year old. He is a little guy weighing only 8 pounds. Mickey is so small and delicate that he reminds us of a little white mouse ... drop a 5 lb bag of sugar on him and he might not survive! Life in the great big world has hardly been a Disney experience for this tiny dog. He was surrendered to the Manhattan shelter after having bitten a child. He showed no aggression either in the shelter or in our care, so we placed Mickey in an experienced, adult only poodle home, expecting him to flourish there. However, his adoptive family soon discovered that he is terrified of men. While he did well with his new Mom and was a big hit at her office, where he accompanied her daily, Mickey was returned to rescue after biting his new Dad badly. Sadly, both Mickey and his Dad were victims of the abuse that Mickey experienced in his past, the full extent of which we will never know. We are now looking for a "woman only" home for Mickey where men and kids are infrequent visitors. Mickey would likely do best with a single woman who has the time and patience to help a little dog overcome big fears. Experience with troubled animals is essential. Mickey is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He is even housebroken and will run to the door when he needs to go out. We would prefer to foster Mickey out initially to see how he fares in his next environment before formally adopting him into his next home. If you would like to offer Mickey a foster home, with a view to potentially adopting him in the future, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application.
Harry Potter
A BIG THANK YOU TO MINDY OF SUNSHINE GOLDEN OLDIES GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUE AND HER WONDERFUL FAMILY FOR OFFERING HARRY POTTER A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME IN UPSTATE NEW YORK ... HARRY POTTER IS ENJOYING THE COUNTRY LIFE, WHICH HE IS SHARING WITH SEVERAL SENIOR GOLDENS AND TWO OTHER COCKER SPANIELS ADOPTED BY MINDY AND HER FAMILY FROM ABANDONED ANGELS.
WHO CAN BELIEVE IT? It's the Tenth Anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter book! In honor of this famous British fantasy character's tenth birthday, we have named this handsome 10 year old English Cocker after J.K. Rowling's famous hero. We wonder what Harry and his friends from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry would make of this poor dog's plight. Surely they would find our Harry Potter the victim of treachery as bad as any the most evil sorcerer could inflict. After 10 years of loyal service to his family, our little red wizard found himself dumped at a kill shelter. The reason? His family simply did not want him anymore. Their last name must have been Voldemort, for who else could have been so heartless? Nevertheless, despite his plight, our Harry Potter did not despair. Instead, even with age and evil forces working to thwart him, Harry Potter used his wizardry to cast a magic spell and find his way to rescue. Harry Potter has now been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. In short, he's all set to conquer the Wizarding world! If you would like to offer Harry Potter a loving foster home or, better still, a forever home to call his own, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. You don't have to believe in witchcraft to help Harry Potter ... after all, when love abounds, magic is everywhere. Or haven't you heard?
Wallaby
A BIG THANK YOU TO CARMELLA OF STATEN ISLAND FOR OFFERING WALLY A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME, WHICH WALLY IS SHARING WITH CARMELLA'S MAJESTIC GREAT DANES.
BIO:
Hello, my name is Wallaby and there are a lot of things I wannabe ... among them, the light of your life, your protector, and your best friend. I am a 3 year old purebred Cocker Spaniel with a natural (undocked) tail. Until I came into Rescue, I did not experience much of anything good in life. Most people were quite unkind to me, hence my ability to trust was badly impaired. Sad though it may be, I truly did not know what it meant to love or be loved. I was bounced from one home to the next, and every time I came to a new place, I hoped that someone there would treat me as a cherished friend. Sadly, that was not to be. After just one month in my last home, I was surrendered to the Manhattan pound. There were no takers there for me either, so I was surrendered to Abandoned Angels. In this place called Rescue, I have finally found a soft spot to lay my weary head, safe in the knowledge that no one will mistreat me in any way. Slowly, slowly, I have begun to trust those around me. One day, after many weeks, I felt something new and unusual in my heart, which I somehow realized must be love for those volunteers who have been caring for me. Everyday, they ask me the same important question: "Wallaby, who do you wannabe?" For a long time, I did not know the answer. But then one day, it came to me, gently making its way into my subconscious as I dreamed a perfect dream, the one I used to have as a very small puppy. When I woke, I suddenly knew what I wanted in life and who I wanted to be. Looking up at my caregivers, I relayed the answer through eyes that were no longer just sad, but at long last somewhat hopeful: "After all I have been through, I still wannabe someone's treasured pet. I want the gift of unconditional love."
If you can offer me your whole heart, then I am prepared to put my paw in your trustworthy hand, either as a foster dog or as an adopted member of your family. I am neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and have tested negative for heartworm. I will go home professionally groomed and with a new leash and collar. If you would like to take my leash in your hand and lead the way to my new beginning, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. I will be checking my inbox daily.
Love (at long last),
Wallaby
Only Oni
A BIG THANK YOU TO GLENDA OF BAYSIDE, NY, FOR OFFERING ONI A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!
Meet Oni, the world's most adorable little troll. When we first met him, Oni was clearly having a hard time. He was turned into Manhattan Animal Care and Control as a stray with a nasty, bloody cyst in his ear that was giving him a lot of grief. One would have thought our little gremlin would have been irritable given the discomfort he was in, but not Oni. He was very happy for us to take him in our arms as we lifted him from his upper level cage, and then joined us for a little walk in the afternoon sunshine. With every step of his stocky little body, Oni seemed to be telling the world how invincible he is (maybe a little down on his luck, but hardly out for the count). As best we can tell, Oni is a Beagle/Cocker cross who exemplifies the best of both breeds. He is a stoic little fellow with a wonderful temperament and, unlike many beagles, not a barker. He would do wonderfully well in a home with kids and will make the quintessential family pet. Oni seems to love everyone he meets (people and pets included) and to have life by the tail. Oni is about 7 years old and has many years of life and love to devote to a new family. He is predominantly black with a white mask on his face that gives him the appearance of having dipped his muzzle in a bowl of sugar (yes, he's really that sweet). Oni has been neutered, microchipped, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. That nasty cyst has now been removed from his ear and we've treated him to a dental. Oni's hearing is absolutely perfect, as is everything else about him. Ever the optimist, Oni has trotted off for a professional grooming and donned a new leash and collar. He's checking his inbox daily and is all ready to join his new family. If you would like to adopt Oni, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. If you Only Have Eyes for Oni, we can hardly blame you. We're quite in love with him ourselves!
Gwynevere
A BIG THANK YOU TO PATTY AND FAMILY OF MEXICO, NY FOR OFFERING GWENNIE A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME! GWENNIE WILL SURELY BE ENJOYING THE HOLIDAY SEASON THIS YEAR ... THANK YOU, PATTY!
LATEST UPDATE: Sadly, Gwynevere was adopted out to a loving family in PA but was returned after several months. While Gwennie is described as being EXTREMELY LOVING towards her family, she does not like strangers, which is proving problematic, as the household is an active one, with lots of people coming and going. We believe that Gwennie's snippiness around people is due in no small part to infections in both ears, which are currently being treated. Nevertheless, we are looking to re-home Gwennie in an adult only household where visitors are infrequent and where the activity level is low.
UPDATE: Gwynevere has recovered completely and is now READY FOR ADOPTION!! From the way she frolicks with the rest of the pack in her foster home, one would never know that she was ever injured. Gwennie is doing great and now just needs a place to call her forever home. Gwennie would be a super match for someone looking for a sweet buff female Cocker Spaniel in the prime of her life. Gwennie has been spayed, is up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. She is now a completely healthy girl.
BIO: Gwynevere is a beautiful 7 year old pale buff Cocker Spaniel. This damsel in distress found herself suffering with a dislocated hip at Manhattan Animal Control, where she languished in a cage for over a month. We do not know how the injury occurred, only that her family brought her in for euthanasia. While Animal Control could not summon King Arthur and his Knights to come to Gwynevere's aid, they tried many rescue groups and finally found a place for her with Abandoned Angels. While Gwynevere does require orthopedic surgery, she is expected to recover fully. Last year we had a dog pass through our doors who required surgery for an identical injury and he came through it like a champ. These days he spends his days frolicking on the beach and surfing waves in North Carolina. We are of course hoping for an equally happy ending for Gwynevere. Gwynevere will require several weeks of cage rest after surgery, but should be ready for adoption in early January. If you would like to be Gwynevere's Knight in Shining Armor, please contact us to discuss her further.
Winston
THIS POSTING IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF BIFF, WINSTON'S HEARTWORM POSITIVE FRIEND, WHO DID NOT SURVIVE HEARTWORM TREATMENT. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE.
Hello, my name is Winston. I am a handsome 3-4 year old purebred Cocker Spaniel. I have been very neglected during my life and until rather recently have not received much pampering. I came into rescue badly bitten up by fleas and ticks, and also covered in mange and ringworm. By the time I arrived, I had lost big patches of fur, and (worse still) also tested Heartworm positive. I have now completed Heartworm treatment and no longer have "cooties" of any kind on my skin or coat, so I am ready for adoption now! I will devote my heart and soul to my new family and fill their lives with love, all that I ask in return is that they take good care of me (especially important is that I receive a monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventative). I am neutered, microchipped, up-to-date with all shots, and will be professionally groomed prior to adoption. I would do best in an experienced Cocker Spaniel home where my new owner will take my traumatized background into account and give me time to settle in and demonstrate what a good dog I can be. We need to build trust together, which will not happen overnight. I would really prefer an adult only home, although I could be placed in a home with very mature kids who have lots of dog experience. I can be rather unsure of myself in new environments and around strangers, but once I feel secure, I am just the best boy ever. If you would like to open your heart and home to me, please request an application from Abandoned Angels at rescue@nyabandonedangels.com ... I'll be waiting to hear from you. Please give me a chance! Love, Winston XXOO
Pokey
UPDATE: FOLLOWING A VISIT WITH A LEADING OPTHALMOLOGIST, WE HAVE LEARNED THAT POKEY HAS LOST MOST OF HIS VISION DUE TO JUVENILE CATARACTS. HIS WORLD IS NOW A SHADOWY, SCARY PLACE FOR HIM, WHICH WOULD ACCOUNT FOR HIS SKITTISH NATURE AND FEAR OF STRANGERS. WE HOPE TO RAISE SUFFICIENT FUNDS TO PROVIDE POKEY WITH CATARACT SURGERY ON BOTH EYES. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A DONATION TOWARDS POKEY'S FUNDRAISING EFFORT, PLEASE SEND A DONATION VIA PAYPAL TO THE FOLLOWING RECIPIENT ADDRESS: DONATION@NYABANDONEDANGELS.COM (PLEASE INDICATE THAT YOUR DONATION IS "FOR POKEY").
BIO: Pokey is a purebred black Cocker Spaniel with a splash of white on his chest (the quintessential Pilgrim outfit) is just 2 years old. Pokey was an owner surrender to the Brooklyn shelter. No specific reasons were provided when he was given up ... his family said they just did not want him anymore. A lame excuse if ever there was one! Now that Cocker Rescue has gotten to know him, we feel that Pokey would do best in a quiet, adult only home. Too many people coming and going tends to confuse him. Pokey would do well with an experienced Cocker Spaniel family who will not be overwhelmed by his quirks (he can get feisty with strangers, which is something that his new owners should be prepared to work on). Pokey is a good little dog but has the potential to be a fabulous dog ... he just needs a little guidance and firm but gentle discipline. Pokey is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. He will be professionally groomed before going home and will also come with a new leash and collar. If you are an experienced Cocker Spaniel owner and have room in your heart and home for Pokey, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Pokey will make a wonderful new addition with whom to celebrate the holidays this year and for many years to come.
A BIG THANK YOU TO GAIL OF KERHONKSON, NY FOR OFFERING POKEY A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!
Tony
MANY THANKS TO THE REEVES FAMILY OF LARCHMONT, NY FOR OFFERING TONY AND HIS NEW FOSTER BROTHER FRISBEE A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME!
Hello, my name is Tony. Whoever says that a slightly older dog is not worth adopting is full of Baloney! I am a handsome 8 year old purebred Cocker Spaniel. I am a beautiful deep rust color. I came into Rescue after having been found as a stray. I am still a little bit fearful (my nerves just could not take life on the streets) but I am finally starting to feel safe and much more like my old self. I am a chubby, happy-go-lucky boy who wants nothing more than to sink into a comfy sofa and watch TV with my special someone. Although I'm not much of an athlete, I enjoy going for walks. I love the autumn leaves and just can't wait to hear them crunching under my little feet. Fall is just my favorite time of year! Pumpkin pie and turkey, here I come!! Let's spend the upcoming holidays together! I am neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and have tested negative for heartworm. I have just been professionally groomed and will go home with a new leash and collar. If you would like to help me live happily ever after, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. I'll be checking my email inbox daily! Love and Licks from your friend Tony XXOO
Cody
CODY IS LOOKING FOR A FOSTER HOME WITH LOTS OF DOG EXPERIENCE. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO OFFER CODY A PLACE TO HANG HIS HAT, PLEASE DROP US A LINE!
Cody is a handsome parti-colored Clumber Spaniel/Cocker Spaniel cross who has just turned 6 years old. He is a big, imposing boy with a heart of gold. Cody came to us as an owner surrender after his Dad suffered a stroke and could no longer care for him. Cody is a very loving and playful boy who is happiest when he is receiving loads of attention. He might best be described as a "total ham." Cody will do best in an experienced, adult only Spaniel home where someone has a lot of time to devote to him. As Cody truly yearns to be "man's best friend," we believe he would do exceptionally well with a male owner. Although Cody enjoys the company of other dogs, he would enjoy being the only pet and the center of someone's canine universe. Cody is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. He has been fully vet checked, including bloodwork and a dental. He passed with flying colors and is a very healthy boy. If you would like to adopt Cody, please email rescue@nyabandonedangels.com and request an application. Cody is waiting to rock your world!
Moo-moo
MANY THANKS TO REBECCA FOR OFFERING MOO-MOO A SAFE AND LOVING FOSTER HOME ON HER FARM IN VERMONT!
Those of you who appreciate the finer things in life may appreciate Moo-moo, a 10 year old black and white Cocker Spaniel who deserves the finer things in life, too. From Moo-moo's point of view, the finer things in life are pretty simple, although he has found them hard to come by: a loving owner and a place to call home. Moo-moo came into rescue after having been abandoned at the Brooklyn shelter by the family with whom he had spent his entire life. As an older boy, Frette's chances of adoption in a city shelter were slim to none and he was scheduled for euthanasia. When we heard about Moo-moo, we could not turn our backs on him as his family had. Moo-moo is neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. If you are looking for a dog who is especially deserving of a life as a pampered pet, Moo-moo is the one for you!b>
Lady Godiva
Fat Actress (otherwise known as Lady) is a curvaceous 8 year old Cocker Spaniel who came to us as an owner surrender. The colors in her coat remind us of a chocolate box: patches of caramel running through white chocolate. Fat Actress wishes she had been born in an era when curvy starlets were better appreciated. Back then, one Fat Actress equalled two of the Olsen Twins! Fat Actress has been wondering if her plump and feminine figure could be one reason why she has been offered so few roles lately. Although she has for the last few weeks been consulting Jenny Craig (and a new diet pal called Valerie) about developing a slimmer bod, what Fat Actress really needs to boost her self-esteem (as well as her metabolism) is a fabulous character part. Fat Actress is well-equipped to audition for a role in your family production, having been spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated and tested for heartworm. If you would like to invite Fat Actress in to read for you, please contact Abandoned Angels to discuss her further. As her agent, we can tell you all the reasons why Fat Actress would be perfect for the role of "Snuggle Bug," for which she has been diligently rehearsing in any warm lap she can find.
FAT ACTRESS WOULD LIKE TO INVITE THE FOLLOWING SPONSORS TO TAKE A BOW:
Many thanks to Treena Horn for generously picking up the tab for some early vetting. And a big special thank you to Howard and Robert of Malverne, NY for providing our drama queen with a safe and loving foster home while she awaits her next big break!
Flipper
UPDATE:
UPDATE: BIG NEWS! Flipper has moved to a foster home in Maryland that he will be sharing with 8 other rescued Cocker Spaniels. Thank you Rhea and family!
BIO:
Flipper is a sweet, laid back cocker spaniel that loves his toys. He's a quiet cocker that likes to take his time toodling around the yard sniffing out squirrels and other critters. He is house trained and walks well on a leash. If left alone for long periods of time he is happy to go into his crate and take a snooze. He loves to go for walks and visit with people he meets along the way and he gets along well with other dogs, mostly ignoring them. He likes to be part of a cocker pile when its nap time but is also happy to be with his human -- and that is his definite preference. He follows his foster mom from room to room and if she stops to work on the computer, talk on the phone or cook a little something, he is close by watching to be sure she doesn't get too far away.
Flipper has Cushing's, an adrenal gland problem, but it is well controlled with medication and he no longer has problems with excessive drinking and urination. He's lost a great deal of weight and feels and acts much younger than his years. Do not overlook the love Flipper has to share because of his age or Cushing's. Flipper is a wonderful, loving cocker spaniel that wants to share his life and love with someone special.
