Hugs for Hugo ... he could certainly use a few, although we will have to wait a bit, as he is not feeling particularly cuddly right now. Hugo is a handsome buff male Cocker Spaniel with a natural tail just 4 years old. He is clearly an abuse/neglect case, as he is wary of people and particularly fearful of men. We are fortunate to have found an experienced foster for Hugo in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he is starting to get his bearings and also to come out of his shell. Hugo comes to us from Animal Care and Control of NYC, where he was turned in as an owner surrender by someone who had hoped to turn him into a "cujo" type fighter. At heart, any Cocker Spaniel is a water fowl dog with a love for people and of nature, not a vicious guard dog. As a very sensitive breed, the Cocker Spaniel cannot cope with harsh tactics ... blessed with a keen intelligence and an eager desire to please, Cockers react best to rewards based training and a consistent approach. At the moment we are getting back to basics with Hugo, who needs to reconnect with his Inner Cocker (and maybe ruffle a few feathers as some unsuspecting ducks take flight). As he rises to the occasion, we are very proud of the strides he is making so far. His emotional wounds aside, Hugo is otherwise a healthy boy who has been neutered, microchipped, is current on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. Hugo will shortly be treated to a professional grooming and will be sporting a new leash and collar at the time of going home. Although currently safe in foster care, Hugo will ultimately be seeking adoptive placement. If you would like to meet him, please click here to fill out an online application or email to request one. Connect with Hugo and connect with your Inner You.
