Oliver Twist is a 5 year old long haired, blue merle Dachshund with striking eyes, one blue and one brown. He is a very sweet and friendly boy who comes to us through a Twist of Fate. His owner recently walked into our vet's office requesting that Oliver be euthanized. He explained that Oliver had gained a lot of weight (exceptionally dangerous to a Dachshund's health, particularly the spine), so much so that it was difficult for Oliver to maneuver around. Whether Oliver's weight issues are a case of "Please sir, can I have some more?" or due to an underlying medical problem such as a thyroid condition (which is highly treatable), we do not know. As the owner provided few answers and did not seem particularly interested in any of the relevant questions, our vet simply took the dog and telephoned us for help. Of course we accepted Oliver into rescue right away ... the Battle of the Bulge is not a reason to put anyone down (let alone a dog of 5 years). We are currently awaiting the results of full bloodwork on Oliver, following which we will determine the best way back to a fit and trim figure for him. Once his medical issues are addressed, Oliver is sure to have many years of life ahead and will make a wonderful addition to any family. He has in the meantime been neutered, microchipped, is current on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. Oliver will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar (as well as a low cal dog food). Oliver is available for either foster or adoptive placement (experience with the breed is desirable but not essential).
