Things have been rather Ruff for Rufus. This handsome purebred Cocker Spaniel found himself surrendered to Animal Care and Control of New York City by a "family" who had come to feel he was simply "too old" to have a place in the hearts anymore. At roughly 10 years of age, he is indeed an older gent, and sadly fell within a category of shelter pet that often proves the most difficult to re-home. The adoption prospects for older male dogs, particularly those who are black in color, are indeed very slim. Despite his sweet and gentle temperament, there were no takers for Rufus on the adoption floor, so of course he found himself on the euthanasia list. As we could not bear to see his sweet life end in such a cold-hearted way, we pulled him at the 11th hour. We are now hard at work finding placement for him. Although an older dog, Rufus is in very good health and has a frisky nature. He has been neutered, microchipped, is current on all shots, and has tested negative for heartworm. Rufus will shortly be treated both to a dental cleaning as well as to a professional grooming and will be sporting a new leash and collar at the time he goes home. If you have ever been through a Ruff time in your life, perhaps you can understand this poor boy's perspective. To take Rufus home, please email and request an application. Rufus is waiting to hear from you!
