Sable is a 9 year old purebred jet black Cocker Spaniel with special needs. She came into the Brooklyn Shelter as an owner surrender due to glaucoma and cataracts, which have left her blind. Had her cataracts been treated years ago, the glaucoma would never have developed, and her vision also could have been restored. Her medical needs went unmet, however, with the result that Sable has lost her sight. Given her handicap, her family actually came in requesting euthanasia. Of course there is no need for this, as blind dogs can and do live happy lives. What's more, Sable is an exceptionally gentle girl (although that extends only to people; she does not like other dogs, we suspect because the blindness makes her feel vulnerable). Sable is now under the care of a veterinary ophthalmologist who is getting her glaucoma under control. She is currently receiving treatment to relieve the pressure in her eyes (she will need lifetime drops for dry eye) and doing much better. Sable is otherwise a healthy girl who has been spayed, microchipped, is current on all shots and has tested negative for heartworm. She will be treated to dentistry and will also have a few benign lumps and bumps removed prior to going home. Sable will be professionally groomed before adoption and will go home with a new leash and collar.
