OUR MISSION

Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue, Inc. (dba NY Abandoned Angels Rescue) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of Cocker Spaniels and other dogs in need of loving forever homes. We will not reject any dog due to age or health reasons and often accept dogs with temperament and/or medical issues.  We rely solely on donations whether through adoptions or the generosity of the public to help pay for the veterinary care of sick, physically disabled, and behaviorally challenged dogs. AACSR has saved approximately 3,300 dogs, including 200 dogs in 2012, 140 dogs in 2013, 185 in 2014, 175 dogs in 2015, and 125 in 2016. We are a proud member of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals.

Given our limited resources, we give priority to Cocker Spaniels and other dogs in local kill shelters that are in danger of being destroyed. We also accept owner surrenders on a space available basis, and request a surrender fee reflecting whether the dog has been spayed or neutered, is up to date with vaccinations, and has any chronic health problems. Some of our adoptable dogs also come from puppy mills or breeders across the country who wish to downsize.

Each of our dogs has been spayed or neutered, is up to date with vaccinations, on heartworm, flea and tick preventative and has been vetted by our wonderful vet. We are tremendously grateful for his help with our dogs, the care he shows our Abandoned Angels, and the love and attention provided to each of our dogs by our vet and his caring and dedicated staff.

We seek forever homes where our Abandoned Angels will be cherished and valued family members for the rest of their lives. We carefully evaluate not just a prospective adopter's interaction with the dog, but also the dog's interaction with his or her prospective adopter. A home visit may be required. We prefer adopters who have experience with Cockers and/or have previously owned a dog, but do adopt to first-time dog owners.

We regret that due to the uncertain backgrounds of many of our dogs, we rarely adopt an Abandoned Angel to a family with small children. We will NOT adopt one of our dogs as an outdoor dog. Cockers thrive in environments where they spend quality time with their human family and participate in family activities - even if it’s just sitting on the couch watching TV together. A Cocker left alone in the backyard on an ongoing basis is a miserable dog who will be more likely to develop skin and ear problems than a well-cared for, indoor pet.

A dog is truly the best friend you will ever have. A dog's love is unconditional, his forgiveness boundless, and his trust and belief in his people unmatched. It is truly humbling to walk in the company of such Angels.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

The best way you can help us is to provide a loving, permanent home for one of our Abandoned Angels. Please also make sure that each of your pets is spayed or neutered. Spaying and neutering helps reduce pet overpopulation and reduces the risk of certain diseases, including certain types of cancer and pyometra in females.

We are also desperately in need of foster homes for our pups. Some of our dogs are boarded, which is not ideal for the dog (despite the wonderful care provided by our vet and his staff) and costly for us.

If you cannot adopt or foster a dog, we also need: $$$$ (for food, boarding and vet expenses), collars and leashes, treats for the dogs, dog food, beds, blankets and towels, dog walkers who are willing to socialize the dogs, help w/transport (to help with pulling dogs in more distant shelters and transporting area cockers to other rescues when we don't have the space).
